this is really dumb.
I posted about problem with shifting my
Nuovo Record rear derailleur after thorough
cleaning, well I found the problem tonight
(I've gotten real good at adjusting in the meantime).
I spent time research tensioning, spring adjustments,
Had the alignment checked (its ok), tightened cables.
I should have remembered what my mentor in
computers taught me. KISS (keep it simple stupid)
tonight I tightened the friction shifter, doesn't slip
anymore. . . DOH.

Marty,
We must have gone to the same bike mechanics school! What year did you graduate/drop out? :D I think I have learned more about bicycle mechanics adjusting, removing/re-installing, etc., etc., trying everything in the world two or three times to get something to work right THEN find out the simple problem.

Marty, welcome to the club. We've all done it and sometimes still do. Remembering to KISS it is the hardest thing to recall.

I had a similar problem and it turned out the deraillur hanger was loose. It would get out of position just enough to cause a shift every once in a while. It wasn't so loose as to be really noticeable, I only realized that was what it was when I was cleaning it and could wiggle it back and forth slightly.
