Nice going on the reverse-fork idea. I like that.

East Hill

The chain / seat stays had a little tube coming out before it split into the individual pipes toward the dropouts....

It was easier to cut off the individual tubes vs the thicker main tube... so I just left those bits out there > I plan to use them to mount lights and other items =)

I used a single speed adapter kit (shimano compatible) to convert my rear wheel into a single speed:

http://velocide.com/images_old/2008_pics/Jan/tall_bike_resized/tall_bike_update-000002.JPG

One side of the spacer is a bit wider than the other (and it is reversible) so my chainline is 100% spot on. No need for a tensioner.

SWEET !

Update, after going to work and back I realized that I need more speed... also, my chain fell off twice during hard cornering.. I decided to install the RD with the 1 speed setup.

Here you go:

http://www.velocide.com/images_old/2008_pics/Jan/tall_bike_resized/tall_bike_update_3-000001.JPG

Now I can use the BIG RING !!!!!

Much more speed, and the chain will stay PUT no matter how fast I turn !

^^^^ Looks great !

I'd like to comment on your chain, it looks extraordinarily tight.

I had a problem getting the perfect tension due to the inability to
adquire the correct rear cog.

My chainline is very straight, but the tension is just not adequate.
Maybe if I could find one of those half-links or something I may
get it right, so for the mean time I just added a deraileur to use
as a tensioner. =)

I had the same problem with adjusting my chain.
What i did was take the part that the wheel sets in
(not sure what it call)
of the rear forks i chopped off the top frame
and welded on the bottom rear forks to allow for adjustment
I will try to get i shot up sometime today
my explaining aint all that good

another awesome (read: no welding, looks like it shouldn't work, etc...) solution to the "i need to adjust chain tension, but the dropouts won't allow it" problem is a ghost chainring:

http://www.ciclistica.it/images/ghost_chainring.jpg

the trick is finding the right sized ring to put in between the front chainring and the cog/freewheel/coaster. i'm guessing if you're building a tallbike, finding chainrings of different sizes won't be a problem...

Capn ¡FUN!

I used a ghost ring for awhile because it looks cool, but they always end up falling out when I'm going 30 downhill in the dark. And they don't just flop in the road, they take off rolling and jump in a ditch somewhere.

Now I welded horz dropouts in and aint had a prob.

Made this one about 5 years ago for a laugh with some friends. Damn near unrideable....

It had a motorcycle front wheel as a rear and a 5 speed jackshaft. Heavy and stoopid....but kinda fun ;)

hey hillsy, rig up a front wheel generator behind the front fork so the headlight will work but it still will look clean

and btw your chain set-up looks like something Escher would've come up with

i already took off the decals (since its a huffy) and took a little sandpaper to it, all the easily visible rust it coming off easily, so im gonna use this as a donor bike, and build something off of it

OK found some more pics....

Bike has been "decommissioned" so to speak. I still have all the bits, but I won't be re-assembling it. It was horrid to ride, partly because the geometry was crap, and partly cause the forks were too flexy. Rear wheel was the front off a Yamaha FZR250, fork clamps were off a Honda CT110 (postie bikes in Oz)

Anyway, the gearing jackshaft used an elongated axle and widened freewheel hub to meet the chainline of the wide rear wheel. A 2nd derailer was used on the final chain to take care of the fact that I wasn't able to centre either of the final sprockets (too much beer :D) It was a complicated set-up, but the only way I could think of to get 5 speeds on it.....

It had a fairly tuff stance in that last photo, eh?

Yeah...!

Too bad it didn't ride as nicely as it looked, but even with a lot of beer, it sounds as if it was still dangerous :p . Thanks for finding the other photos :D .

Just a little update on my tall bike project....

I modified the front fork a bit... chopped it down and used two of the original top bikes chain-stay tubes ... then I welded some old wrenches in the form of cross-bones... =) My personal touch!
