General Cycling Discussion - Comparing Cotton Bar Tapes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
What is the difference between Velox and Cateye bar tape? Is one thicker/softer than the other? I'm looking into getting some real bar tape (as opposed to my current set-up of adhesive athletic tape). My LBS carries both for about the same price. Does anyone have any first hand experience with either of these two tapes? Which do you prefer?

I haven't tried the velox, but I've used cateye for over a decade and love it.
My latest hooptie bike has the 'viva' bar tape over a few layers of cateye, and it is indeed a bit softer, but nothing to write home about.
Alright. I'm thinkin' that I'll make this a Saturday project. Just get some black tape (I think black only comes Cateye at my LBS), a can of Bullseye shellac, and a cheap-o brush. AL I have to do is figure out the cleanest way to remove my current layers of tape.
And should I go with one or two layers of this stuff? Ah, decisions, decisions...
Well before you get started maybe you ought to look at this just to throw you in more of a quandry....

Here's my cotton bar tape weave plus shellac project on my commuter fixie. I used yellow and brown velox tape and amber shellac. Midway through the winter I added a coat or two of shellac to brighten-up a couple dulled spots. I like it alot.
I'm planning on shellacing, but don't really wanna go with the snakeskin/harlequin wrap. I like it, but not for my oldie...
