I listened to the weather report this morning and heard that there was a strong wind blowing.
I still wanted to ride.
Then they reported that they were delaying flights at the airport. Too windy for planes to take off.
I still wanted to ride.
Then they said that there was a 'severe wind and gale warning' current.
I still wanted to ride.
I got dressed, got my helmet, grabbed my bike and headed outside.
I saw the trees waving at me and felt the wind. The reports were right.
I no longer wanted to ride. I drove into work today.
Does that make me a wimp?

Naw, dude. That's makes you smart, It would be just my luck that a stron gust would happen to blow me right into the path of a semi or something, or maybe blow them over into my lane, I live in Kansas, where if the wind don't blow, it's frigging snow, AAAh-AAAAAAh Kansas. I have seen motor homes flipping end over end due to strong and severe winds, you get sand and dirt blown into your eyes, and look a mess before you get ten feet. Plus, if you wreck on a bike, what are the chances of insurance picking up the tab?

No, because if you did ride, you'd probably be going at 5 mph!

If you were going the "right" way you could set a speed record or something:D
wind only sucks going one way
I think sensible too..you don't want to get to work ready to go back home again! :D
Have a great weekend

G'day, mate! See my reply in the thread 'How was your commute today?'
What really annoyed me was yesterday morning. Wednesday evening someone from the weather bureau was talking about this massive front coming through at 7:00 in the morning. So when I left at 6:45, I had my rain jacket on. What happened? Nothing - the front had gone through earlier. So I arrived at work dripping wet under the rain jacket for no reason.:irritated
Just drop down a chainwheel, and then enjoy speeding home in the afternoon - that's what I did today.

I once tried to cross an exposed bridge in 60 km/h crosswinds. Dumb idea. Discretion is the better part of valour.

I was on holiday once in the wet and windy SW of England. My plan was to cross Exmoor from SE to NW; this is an area of high exposed , treeless moorland.
I set off into a gusty NW wind and managed about 15miles of steep hills into the gales when it suddenly occured to me that this was a holiday. I turned around, and cycled off the moor to the NE, then looped down south to a railway station, with the wind on my tail. That was the fastest 30 mile I have ever done, and the most fun. I thouroughly recomend giving up in the face of adversity.

Depends, are the High Voltage power lines in your area buried below ground or hanging from poles and subject to snapping in the wind?

I think i would do the same exact thing. I have gone outside with my bike and then gone inside and thought to myself that they finally got the weather forecast right.

If it were just a fun ride then I would have said you should have tried it. Since it was a comute then not biking was the right answer.
