Touring - Large Bikebag

Hi all,

I'm looking for a bikebag that will take my soon to be purchased 58cm bike. I want to be able to fit it in the bag with the rear rack still attached. This is important for me because I'll be doing a lot of one - two day trips and I'll be taking the train out of the city. Got to bag the bike for this but can't be constantly detaching and reattaching the rack.

Would prefer a light but sturdy bad. Padding not necessary. The less bulky the better.

Any suggestions really appreciated. Thanks!

In North America bed mattresses come in a very thick plastic bag. A single mattress bag will hold a bike very well.

Also you might try going to the airport and asking the airlines. Many sell bags so passengers can put their bikes in them. In Toronto I bought a bag from an airline for $5.

Was the train you took Paris-London the chunnel Hi Speed?? Am doing that later in the summer and am curious if you take it with you on the same train or have to ship it seperately?

If on same train in the same car with you or in a baggage car, never have taken the Chunnel so don't know how the trains are configured

I have a bike bag I bought last year in Berlin which worked perfectly Paris- Miami via Air france, great trip, nice people both ends, and no damage to bike either direction, used a box eastbound and discarded it at CDG Paris

I use a "body bag" from ground effect. They don't have padding but can be easily carried in a pannier when touring.

Yes, I took the Eurostar, which is the Chunnel train. You take it with you on the same train, just like everyone else does with their normal luggage. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Their is a small baggage section at the end of each car because most of the passengers have largish suitcases and other stuff.

I made sure I was one of the very first people on the train, and then I sat on one of the two seats provided in the baggage section just to be near my bike in case of any problems. There weren't any, but maybe that's because I was near it all the time. I would suggest you do the same. What are your trip details? I suggest you buy the tickets as far in advance as possible!!!

Riding in Spain late May-June dates not firm yet dependent on a Madrid riding partner

Train Madrid to Paris ;Paris 3-4 days end of June then to london and can't make dates yet dependent on a buds arrival in LDN from Miami, but will try when I finish in Madrid

The few times I did train travel last year I sat near the bike, more from nervousness
than the thought someone might take it

The only time I felt uncomfortable on a train was from Budapest west towards Vienna

One one train I met a couple of Americans who were in Europe as bike tour guides, their bikes were in bags, and they just placed them in the end baggage area and sat ahead of them, unconcerned I thought but perhaps cause this was not their first trip with bikes

I don't worry about my bike when it's packed and I'm travelling on Eurostar. However, if I were taking a local train, I'd lock it with 2 locks.

Eurostar is just first class luxury. I don't even think twice chucking my bike in the luggage area and going off for a nap.
