any tips to winter proof your bike? i like to ride in the snow on occasion, but the salt really did my bike in this year. its a piece of junk schwinn so its now my beater, but i`m worried about my new giant.

any suggestions?

The simplest thing is to add fenders, ideally with mudflaps. Remember that the front tire is the primary source of salt and grit spray.

What Paul said. Also a long mud flap almost to the ground. I do this on all my winter/rain bikes. It works very well. Even in the nice weather it keeps the chain clean longer.

yeah but those kind of accesories look a little, gay? sounds stupid but i`ve seen some fenders and i wasn`t impressed. but i could buy into it if they had a fender with a quick release kinda system. don`t want to get klobbered.

if its just a winter beater it wont matter how it looks. ANd if your running your giant through there i think the odd looking fender is worth the thousand dollar bike

I have a giant with full fenders, along with a big ol front and rear light. Gay? That's for you to decide. I think it looks pretty nice, don't pay much of an aerodynamic penalty, can still hit over 30 on a busy avenue, it stops like no road bike I've ever been on, and the fenders keep my front and back dry.

One important thing to remember, put some electrical tape over all the little nooks behind the top of the fork, on the bottom of the brake calipers, etc. It'll help keep the grit from getting in any of those tiny hard to reach places.
Other than fenders, that's about it. Maybe add disc brakes, those things def work better in the rain.

yeah, its a nice looker, just can`t get used to the fenders. personal choice i guess.

KR.KITT will thank you for the fenders. That is assuming you refer to your bike as the Knight Industries Two Thousand. :rolleyes:Also your clothes should stay cleaner.

I've never been able to get use to the look of fenderless bikes. Different strokes, and all that.

If you wash the bike after every ride and frequently clean and lubricate the chain, you can get by fine without fenders. You may decide that the hassle factor is too high, but it is certainly an option. There will still be an issue with clothing, however.
