"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Giro on OLN

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It doesn't look like OLN (or any American station) will televise the Giro this year. Does anyone know otherwise?

Just their usual Sunday shows. 3 hours of coverage for a three week race.

Enjoy it though, because my guess is that next year you get nothing. No Lance, No American advertising dollars.
God. I'm just going to bone up on my Italian and watch the live feed from La Gazzetta.
Koffee
please help the dumb guy: we can watch the giro on something called la gazzetta? is this on the web? you wouldn't happen to have a few more details? thanks a bunch.
dan
Someone else posted in a different thread today about the Italian national newspaper for sports: La Gazzetta. They said they do a live feed of the Giro on their website. Here was last year's website: http://www.gazzetta.it/Speciali/Giroditalia/2004/eng/
I guess this year's isn't up yet, but it'll probably be up in the next few days.

Will OLN show the tour just on the weekends now that lance won't be riding next year???
With discovery channel trying to broaden its market in europe , maybe eurosport should broaden its market in the states. wishful thinking.

Really wishful. I think they don't want to compete with ESPN and Fox Sports. They probably think we're not sports oriented. I guess we really aren't. :(
I'll just post what Jack decided not to post: http://www.gazzetta.it/Speciali/Giroditalia/2005/presentazione/default.shtml

Someone should make this question a sticky: No, Discovery channel has said that they will not be carrying any bike racing.
OLN will have daily coverage of the TDF.

I think the point the poster was making was that as Discovery expands to Europe, Eurosport should try to expand to the States. If Eurosport followed the Discovery Channel example, they may be able to pick up a viewer base.
We should make it a sticky, though...

If you have DishNetwork satellite service you can subscribe to the Italian channel RAI for about $13/month. I THINK the Giro will be broadcast on it daily. Everything will be in italian, but who cares? Cancel the subscription in June.
I have to wonder if OLN is scaling back their racing schedule so as not to promote a rival channel (Discovery).

Actually they are no longer rivals - Discovery Communications acquired OLN a few weeks ago and plans to expand cycling coverage. Here is the story on onltv.com: Discovery acquires oln (http://www.olntv.com/olnbb/viewtopic.php?t=2278&highlight=&)

I hear you. That was a cruel joke to be sure :(
Thanks for revealing the joke. I almost got excited there for a moment. :(

I was so excited as Adelphia gave us free access to OLN (and a few otehr channels) for the remaining of the year.
I switch to OLN and what do I find......
The whole day was filled with bull riding programing.
I'm wonderign if there's a bull riding forum out there complaining about how there's too much cycling on sundays.

OLN will be providing realtime and archived webcasts every weekday for $6. Checkout their website. Gotta get it. I can't get enough Giro on the weekend recap shows.
On the end of their tour de georgia show they just said let oln know if you want day to day coverage next year. I suggest everyone send them an email to show that we do.
btw-I think it's kinda low of them to charge for steaming video on the net for Giro when they've really got nothing better on their network broadcast for most of the day...

OLN will have Giro coverage Saturday and Sunday, no live coverage and no coverage during the week.
Let's hope for no Al Trautwig!

apparently OLN has made a deal with an online broadcaster called MediaZone so you can see the games online that OLN doesn't carry. It's at www.mediazone.com/channel/cycling/. $5.95 for the whole race, every day. No commentary, but live sound.

My friend is a hunting & fishing nut, and complains every July.
I have to see Stage 19 (http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2005//giro05/?id=stages/giro0519), a dirt road?
In order for me to have OLN, I have to upgrade my cable package and pay that 70 bucks a month. Now they want me to pay more so they can give me something I should already have? We shouldn't have to pay a dime more. Or do this for me, OLN- tell comcast to include OLN in their basic cable rates, and THEN I'll think about paying the extra money for a telecast that I can already get for free by logging onto the Italian channels broadcasted on the internet.
Cheap bastards.

I went to watch this on the weekend and found that Canadian OLN has a different schedule than the states.
We had Super Dogs and Pilot Guide on instead of the Giro. What kills me is the weekend before they had the tour de Gerogia on.
How are they expected to make loyal viewers with incosistent programming? They are really pissing me off on it as Sundays does not seem to be the normal programming night for Super Dogs either. Irony is that CTV has an intrest in Discovery channels programming and they also carry and support the feed for OLN.
I love the fact that whomever does the programming in Canada also smokes crack.

For all of us in Canada who missed out!!!
That's messed up. They don't have a US feed that you can link to instead of a Canadian feed?

The way I hear it, RAI has the rights to show the Giro in Canada, yet RAI isn't licensed to broadcast in Canada. I suspect OLN Canada is just too cheap to pony up for rights to the Giro. So when OLN in America announced its PPV webcast, I thought that would be my salvation; but alas, Canadians can't access that either. I guess I'll just have to be content with the Eurosport audio feed.
None of the other links offered come through for Canadians?

Actually, I'm watching the live feed from gazetta.it right now, and it syncs almost perfectly with the eurosport.com audio! Thanks KB!
