I bought and installed a Yakima bike roof mount system today, and installed it on my Murano. With a bicycle mounted, the wind noise is excessive - even at 30 mph. Does anyone have any experience with and without the optional windscreen offered by Yakima? I'm wondering if I need to go back and buy one of those?

I can't say I've ever noticed them being particularly noisy except when there are no bikes on top and you forget to fold down the carrier for the front wheel. Then you get a nice high pitched sound like a tuning fork.

Or maybe I don't notice the sound because of the three boys under the age of 12 in the backseat.

I had tons of wind noise on my Highlander, the problem was the currents between the bike rack cross bars and the factory rack. I installed the wind screen and problem solved, it was a snap to install.

I noticed considerable wind noise on my Acura Legend and now on a new Toyota Sienna. The fairing (standard size, not the mini) all but eliminated noise in both cases. The only downside of them is when they've been on for a while they mar the paint above the windsheild where the rubber gasket sits against the paint. I tried to keep the area waxed more often but that didn't seem to help. A little scratching is worth the reduced noise in my opinion. And if I resell either vehicle, it'll involve a little time with rubbing compound.

Thanks for the input gang, I will install one on Wednesday. I was surprised how noisey it still was when I took the bike off the car. I thought it was the bike causing the noise, but it was the rack.
