I know this is a bike forum, but I have for the most part, the cycling down. My main concern is the running and the swimmin of a tri(and the running of a dua) as I want to start competeing. Does anyone have any tips on how they trained? For refrence, my 200m swim time is roughly 3'56" and my mile run time at last check (has been a while) was 5'03"(that was 2 years ago thoguh...so I'd bet its at like 7-8 now)

1. What tri distance are you training for?
2. Age?
3. Running experience? (outside of track experience, tell me about your 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon, or marathon time)
4. You say you have the bike down - tell me about your bike experience; TT's? 40k time? what kind of bike?
5. Swimming; any open water experience?

Ah...a local boy. We are practically neighbors. Are you doing the Benbrook Tri?

Sounds to me like you've got the running part down, too! 5 minute miles are awfully fast! Disclaimer: I'm a swimmer and water polo player and haven't even done one triathlon yet, so I say this from a swimmer's perspective.

I'm a big fan of masters workouts. Do you have any teams near you? I think they're good for several reasons. 1) you swim farther and challenge yourself more when you're with a team, 2) the coach should be able to help you with technique which will help you go faster, 3) the social aspect is nice and 4) you'll get a good idea of how to construct a workout when you're swimming on your own - believe it or not, there is more to swimming than just back and forth along the black line! :)

I don't really have a goal for distances yet, I think I read somewhere it was like .25swim/12bike/3run

Age of 16 (17 in june) so I'm not really looking for the super tris and dus (ironman is no go for me)

I don't have a 40k time, but I can crank out an easy avg of 20-22mph

Outside of track and crosscountry exp? I've done a 5k run and ended up about 45 mins I think? Its been ages .

I have lots of openwater swim experince, I grew up in califorina and learned to swim in the pacific.

Cycleprincess,no I'm not doing the benbrook this year...maybe we could hook up some time and see how I measure up?

You would quite honestly blow me out of the water!! I do this purely for the challenge, and for the fun of it. I could care less about how I place. I would like to NOT come in last, but other then that it's all pretty relative to me. I'm riding HHH this year again, did it last year and loved every minute of it. Um, let me take that back...almost every minute of it. But I finished and I didn't come in last! There is a group of us that train together (when we can) and we have a lot of fun. Right now we are concentrating on the tri, but after May 1st we are back on track for HHH. My goal after the tri is to get in at least 75 miles per week. We'll see how that goes! Do you work out at a gym locally?

I am attaching a link to a website in this response. www.trinewbies.com
It is a GREAT resource for training programs. Under the link "resources" on the left side of the website click "training programs." This will allow you to download training programs for different events including olympic and sprint tris. (For duathlons simply cut out the swimming.) Good luck!
