If the smell doesn't get to you then when the skin at the top of your forehead gets a chemical burn from contact with the caustic sweat residue of your helmet pads, that's a sign that your helmet needs cleaning, right? How else do you know?

I just wash my helmet with Luke warm water with a small amount of soft, ahh I also take out the paddings and wash them separetely, and rinse the helmet thoruoghly
I know it's time when my helmet straps start turning white (salt from the sweat) around the temple and ear area.
