Introductions - Hi

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just thought this seemed like the right place to make my first post. Here's my short biography. I got into cycling about a year ago when I got lucky enough to get a position in my department that let me ride a bike. Four months after I started, me and 3 other guys tried to do the Hotter than Hell 100 in full duty gear. It was fun but I gave out after 80 miles, but since I had only been riding for about 4 months I was happy. Ever since then I've been hooked. I bought a road bike a few days ago since I spend most of my day on a mountain bike for work. I just found this place today and have spent about two or three hours reading. This place looks like a great place to learn just about anything I need.

Hi BC and welcome to the forums. You're right, it's a great place to learn. And to stay motivated as I've found. Stick around and post away! :)
What kind of MTB do they give you to ride at work?

It's a 5-7 year old Trek. I'm not sure what model it is but it just seems to keep on going no matter what I do to it.

Cool! So you're like "Pacific Blue," or something? [Got bodacious partners?]
Okay... I'm sure your work isn't like that at all, but I couldn't resist. Also, I had to distract you while I swallowed that joint [just kidding!].
Welcome to BF.

Bravo! I think bicycle patrols are great. Save one incident (which resulted in my receiving an apology), I've found bike cops exceptionally friendly. You've come to the right place ... expect som ribbing! :D

Welcome to bike forums. You will get alot of info from here.:)
BTW... THANK YOU... for doing what you do.
Hi!
Its really exellent to hear of police, patroling on cycles .
Despite the fact that our goverment strongly promotes the use of alternate transport to the car, there is virtually no police use of cycles even in the inner cities, prefering the use of patrol-cars, no wonder most of the police officers seem to be overweight at least that is my view of them in my neck of the woods (rural N.E England).
Welcome to the forums by the way, there`s an exellent crowd of guys and not forgetting gals also, here.
God bless, regards Willi`c

he he he  I've never understood why cops must pass a rigorous screening process, then they are allowed to devolve into lumps of lard. Up here the State Patrol seem to have strict fitness guidlines... not a fatty among them. But the Sheriff's Department? Oh man. The need dogs to catch the bad guys. Once again, way to go bikecop!
Stop wasting our tax dollars posting here. GO OUT AND ARREST SOME PERPS!
:D
Just busting your balls, officer! Welcome aboard. You guys do a great job. :)
Welcome! Actually, I just joined also, but there seems to be a ton of great information/people here!
:)
Welcome. You guys do a great job, not only fighting crims but also magistrates who give stupid decisions (like the one who dismissed the careless driving charge against the person who knocked me off my bike last year).
Interesting that in our main newspaper recently there was an article comparing the situation for firemen, who are expected to maintain fitness and therefore given open access to their own gym, with that of our local police, who have no such facility and who either work their own fitness or just stack it on. There is a notorious case on at the moment where a police officer has deposited an affadavit that he stitched some people up nearly 20 years ago. The pictures of him then and now show a huge (!) difference.

Well thanks for the nice welcome. To answer velocipedio's question, yes it's exactly like Pacific Blue expect no beach, no cool ocean breeze, no partner, man this sucks what was I thinking . Baboon, I'm not going out there and arresting perps, there are dangerous people out there I feel much more safe here at my computer (just kidding). As far as officer fitness goes our department really just got into that a couple of years back. We have always had a yearly fitness test but it didn't matter if you passed or failed (not really sure what the point of it was). I actually did the same thing alot of you described. I was in shape, got hired, got fat and out of shape. But luckly I decided I didn't like being out of shape so I got my act together and took care of that. Our fitness test is suppose to become mandatory next year, and it will be fun to watch officers fight tooth and nail for their right to be lazy and fat.
