Is there any problem with using Shimano index shifters to shift a Suntour rear derailer (XC LTD Accushift) on a Shimano cassette? I'm sorry if this has been covered before. I searched for it.

I searched for it.I've had mixed results in mixing shimano/suntour shifters/RD.I'm not sure the Suntour and Shimano RD have the same throw ratio. If you have the stuff try it. I wouldn't spend money to try and go that way.

For the most part they will work. Some types are not compatible. Where possible, stick to the same brands for RD/FD/cockpits.

I'm just trying to save some money on my Bridgestone rebuild by using some parts I have on hand. It would be nice if Shimano shifters and cassettes would work with Suntour because the derailers are still fairly plentiful, but Suntour shifters and cassettes seem to be getting pretty scarce. That's the impression I get from eBay, anyway.

I’m running a SunTour XC Ltd derailer with A Shimano 7 speed cassette and SunTour thumshifters and it works about the same as when I had the SunTour 7 speed cassette. Hope this helps.

Speaking from experience here.....shimano 600 RD, shimano freewheel, and suntour downtube shifters: indexing is sloppy, but friction works fine.

As long as the derailer and shifter are the same brand, and the shifter matches the number of sprockets, you'll be OK.
Shimano and Sun Tour sprocket spacing is very slightly different, but the Shimano sprockets are so much better designed that it more makes up for the slight mismatch.
An interesting, sometimes useful kludge is to use Sun Tour 6 speed shifters with a Shimano derailer and a 7-speed cluster. The Sun Tour/Shimano mismatch and the 6-speed/7-speed mismatch cancel each other out! I've done this a number of times, and it works dandy.

Wow! A response from Sheldon Brown to my question. I'm honored!
I'm going to order one of his custom super high cassettes for my street-ridden mountain bike. I wonder if I could get him to autograph it for me?
I'll try the Suntour derailer when I get all of the parts together. If I can't get it to shift satisfactorilly I'll replace it with a Shimano. I really don't need the long cage, anyway.
