Which of these two you would recommend for xc riding? I look for a reliable brake, not requiring to much of adjustment and maintanance, with good modulation and reasonable braking power.

I like my Hayes quit a bit. :D I don't think I'll be buying much from shimano anymore...

I've only ever used Hayes 9, never tried the XT. That said, most internet opinion I've read places the XT higher than the 9 for the following reasons:

1) better modulation
2) monoblock caliper design
3) mineral oil vs DOT
