Im changing my brake/shifter cables + housing. Is there a disadvantage with using full length housing for the entire cable verses having bare cable inbetween the ferrules?

It really doenst cost much more. At Jenson USA it is .75cents per housing foot. Say you add 3 more feet, i think most of us can afford it. It does have more friction but i didnt really notice it when i had full housings. Just keep it well lubed or use thoise teflon coated cables or a nice cable system. If your running rear discs i would definantly do it, i wouldnt bother with the shifter

I just hate full length because it looks ugly...

yea thats the reason im not doing it as well. The only time it does not look ugly is if its for a rear disc brake in my opinion. And many frames have brake housing guides welded in, that doesnt look bad at all

The longer the Brake housings are the springier the feel.
The longer the shift housings the more friction affects the shift quality.

My rear brake cable runs along the bottom left of my top tube. I put cable housing on it when I started using a frame bag to keep the cable from cutting the velcro straps that hold the bag on, but I have noticed, when I don't have the bag on the bike for the straps to hold the housing tight against the top tube the cable housing rattles against the tube making a lot of unnecessary noise. :(

The longer the shift housings the more friction affects the shift quality. Spot-on. We had crummy cable housings in the bad old days, but the open ferruled cable runs ameliorated the situation.
