No news about Ullrich is good news... but I think you must not be following cyclingnews or velonews very hard... Ullrich did pretty well in the two stage tours he particpated in this year. His next race is sometime in mid-May.
All reports are that he's in shape and riding well (fellow riders at the races and even Gode said so - so that means quite a bit).

I think he's going to do much better this year in the Tour. It's his second year with a great team which was a huge problem in 2003. Hopefully, some of the issues with having too many leaders will be worked out. Last year at this time; I saw some photos of him and I couild tell he wasn't going to be able to drop all that weight in two months. On the last day of the Tour he looked great; if he would have looked like that going into the race; he would have made the podium.
Another issue with the team. I think because of the issues and arguments last year; he might be able to make some demands this year. He always seems to get pushed around by sponsors and handlers out of obligation of his background. This is only speculation; but I hope he's able to control his career this year.
Also, in the two interviews with him I've read this year; he seems to enjoy what he's doing, not so obligated. I think the reason you don't hear so much about him this time of year is the press build up of "the ones to beat Lance" adds so much pressure. I mean, it's fun to watch "the ones to beat Lance" get crushed; but if it happens again this year, it's probably not going to be so much fun for those riders.

The problem with Ulrich is that he doesn't have that explosive accleration power needed to put time in the mountains. That to me , has always been his demise, at least, as long as Lance is his adversary in the TDF.

he's lost quite a bit of time in the Timetrials too (with the exception of 2003).

Now Ulrich's got the challenge of Kloden and Vinokourov from his own team. How long can the ambitions of his own talented teamates be stalled assisting him with a win? They have every right to contend the tour for their own Palmares.
There is no such competition on Discovery team. Ulrich's been at the top of his game since 1997. Historically, few men have been able to launch a competitive assault on the Yellow Jersey for such a long time.
Then there are other young rising stars including Ivan Basso and others who have yet to be determined. I believe we'll be seeing some new faces fighting for the lead this year.
I will be pleasantly surprised if Jan places higher than he did last year. The entire tour is a much better event when Jan is pressuring the frontrunners.

You only had to see how Lance blew everyone away in the mountain TT last year... Although he doesn't look like he has last year's form, if the TD Georgia is anything to go on...

He will be in top form by the TDF - I guarantee you. That is more than enough time for him to reach a major form peak. Furthermore, I believe with all my heart that he is exactly where his coach wants him to be at this time. A peak does not last long, and ideally, he will show up at the prologue in absolute top form. I hope that Ullrich shows up in top form - I know that his expectorating german fans certainly will. I want to see him get his butt kicked when all of his fans thinks he is in winning form! Lance will be wiping the german fired lugies off of his yellow jersey on the last day!! :D
