Road Cycling - Campy 8speed

I have a chance to buy the following campy chorus 8 speed
components for less than $200.
Rear Derailleur - light use
crankset with extra 52 and 53 chainrings - light use
Bottom Bracket - new
Ergo levers - light use but better than chainrings
New cables
new hoods
I would need to find front Derailleur and wheelset
(or hubs and build my own).
Ok, is this a good deal? or am I just buying obsolete
stuff? Remember, I'm not racing and have been riding
old friction 6 speed! (yup, retrogrouch territory)

Campy is now making 10 speed equipment. You have to decide if the 8 speed is obsolete. And you have to decide if 16 speeds are enough for the kind of riding you will be doing.

Chorus is not top of the line Campy, but at $200. for parts in very good condition, it is a decent price.
Buying the additional parts may become expensive depending on where you get them.

Actually, Chorus is almost identical in most respects to Record. It may not be top-of-the-line but it's very nearly yop-of-the-line.

In terms of reliabiity and quality, 8sp Chorus is about as good as it gets. It's bomb-proof and Campagnolo still makes and sell replacement parts, so it's quite possible to keep it rolling flawlessly as-if-new. The shifting is all ErgoPower and the weights are comparable to today's 10sp Chorus. In fact, it's pretty much just as good as today's Chorus except that it's 8sp and the brake hoods are pointy.

Another plus is that the Ergo shifters can be re-indexed for 9 and 10 speed, and the crankset and BB can be used with 9sp and, I believe, but this will have to be checked, 10 speed.

So... you could pick all this stuff up, and use the crankset and re-indexed shifters with a 9 or 10 speed set-up [new derailleurs and hubs].

Is $200 a good price? Not bad, but not great. See if you can get it down to $150. That would be a good price. You can get 10speed Centaur semi-group [shifters, derailleurs, cassette, crankset and cables] new for about $350 in some places...

I paid more for a Record/Chorus 8 mix some NOS some lightly used. I did get hubs, cassette, fr. der., seatpost, brakes and a saddle in addition to what you listed but I paid more. How much more? Let's just say you're $200 looks pretty good to me.:o

Stuff works great though and is more than enough gears for me here in flat FLA. Of course my retro Basso is a 6spd freewheel and it does fine by me too.

It never hurts to try to bargain but $200 ain't bad.
