GOOD MORNING from the still chilly north east.
I hope all is well.
I recently re vamped my early 90s falcon road bike into a sport tour /commute machine. I added new gearing , barcons , bb ,headset, new cassete....
as much as I love the bike its not without issues at least for the new duty.
the main thing is I have no brazeons for anything but water bottles/dt shifters.
I was able to mount 35c tires but had to cob job a rear rack and set of freddy fenders ala rivendell style by cutting the fenders and using cable ties/"P" clips and aluminum reflector brackets... DONT LOOK GREAT but works.
my front fender is only a 3/4 as there was not enough clearance to go though my single pivot 105 brake thus the fender stops at the back of the crown and has a tendancy to move a bit.
the p clips are ok but move at times and do cause a bit of trouble there kind of a pain!
my next issue is with the brakes. I have early 90s 105 single pivot (Aero) which Sheldon Brown has said are excellent brakes as side pulls go , one of the sturdiest single pivots ever produced.
my stopping power on big hills is ok but not great so I installed salmon Kool stops and they are better now but nothing like my cantis on the mtb. Im also a big guy and im carrying cargo that I never did before and riding in traffic so better braking is important.
And of course there is the centering issue with single pivots but mainly its the clearance issue.
I was looking at a new frame Surly cross check or a Soma double cross and comparing the geometry I came to realize my Falcon frame and dimensions are *dead on* with the Soma double check and very close to the Surly cross check.
so Im almost perfect with my beloved (BLUE) FALCON and im wondering If its feasible to add braze ons and canti bosses?
bying a new frame/fork is easy its all the other stuff IE : headset, bb, spacing, stems ...$$$$$ and i just re did all of this stuff on the falcon and most of these parts wont fit the newer frames.
I can silver solder /braze / tig weld as well as anyone and I have accsess to a full proffesional machine shop/welding equipment.
1) is it a worthy project? can 531 be added on to easily? tig or solder???
2) 2 where can I get the brazeons / canti bosses? I would make my own for fork and dropout (ss nuts) but Id need rack brazeons and the hardware for canti bosses. Ill have to read sheldons website on his canti jig.
3) another option would be to purchase a new fork set up for 700c /cantis But I do like my lugged 531 fork. Id stilll need to do the rear wheel and rack/fender brazeons.
4) have a frame bulder add the brake bosses and I can do the brazeons as they are the easy part No jig needed! ????
any wisdom will be welcome and needed
many thanks and happy spinning
