Road Cycling - Can anyone help me determine the value of this bike?

Hey everyone, I have this bike here that I don't ride at ALL (I ride mountain bikes) It was given to me so I have no clue of it's value, so I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of it's worth so I know what to sell it for. It's a Raleigh, no campy components, it has all Shimano, so it must not be a high dollar bike. Reynolds 531 frame, 12 speed. Has "Raleigh USA" and "Grand Prix" on the main frame piece. Serial number is 5JN0464 with an M underneath it. The brakes are "dia-compe", and the wheels are "ukai." Other than that I have no clue about anything on it, anyone have an idea?

What's the designation on the top tube?

it has "raleigh usa" and "grand prix" on the top tube, so I assume grand prix is the designation

According to Sheldon Brown's website, the Grand Prix was Raleigh's low-end model and not worth upgrading.

Sorry, my bad, asking you for the designation of the bike. I was looking at the pictures and not at the text. Went back and saw that you had included this bit of information! :o :o

I thought as much, it doesn't seem as high quality as other Raleigh bikes I've seen... so I should just plop it out at a garage sale and ask for 100 bucks? Or is that even too much?

$50 may even be too much....

I thought that the Gran Prix was made only made in Raleigh's Nottingham factory - well, I guess not. The original Nottingham Raleigh Grand Prix was a pretty good bike - light, strong, zippy, fun handling. I have owned five of them and like them all.

Raleigh USA was the name given after Schwinn bought Raleigh in... was it the late 1970's or early 1980's?

The bike you show appears to be 1980's or MAYBE early '90's (does it have 27" or 700 mm wheels?). I notice that the bike you show has cotterless cranks which is a great leap forward compaired with the cottered cranks of earlier Gran Prix.

Anyway, this is not a bad bike. It would normally be the kind of bike you would find at a garage sale for $15.00 and you would snatch it up and squeel all the way home. Of course, you would go to Bikeforums.com and brag about what a great deal you got.

Offer $50.00. It would be a worthy road bike for that money.

A contrasting opinion.

While it's out of focus I can see that Reynolds frame sticker on the seattube. Older Reynolds stickers had the 531 printed diagonally if it was the "full" frame. I think they changed that in the 80s. Does that sticker mention "double-butted" and "stays." If so you've got a quality frame with very average retro components. If it's just main tubes it's still a decent frame.

Raleigh designations are different between old Raleigh and Raleigh USA. Whatever it is I don't think it was bottom of the USA lineup.

You won't get 100$ for any bike at a garage sale. Garage sale hunters look to buy as cheap as possible. If you want to get as many $ as possible put it on eBay. It won't turn big bucks but if you start at around $50 you'll get a few bids.

It's a butted frame (not double) and 700MM wheels...

And on the garage sale note... I got 150 out of a Royce Union (cough DEATH TRAP cough) so I think I may be able to get 100 :D
