Has anyone tried taking the brake shoes off the standard ultegra brakes and putting on some koolstop thinline brakes?
I want some good stopping power and the ultegra pads suck, the compound seems way too hard and it doesn't grip even after sanding it down. Plus, it seems to be putting score marks on my rims and accumulating a lot of pieces of metal on the material. No one around here carries the koolstop pads that fit in the ultegra shoes but everyone carries the thinline brake pads. They seem to have a larger brake surface too.

Koolstop makes shoes for Shimano line.. The best! Black for dry, salmon for wet, and green for carbon rims..

Smart move. I tried Shimano pads in my first-generation Campag. calipers and quickly replaced them with KoolStops, which worked noticeably better.

Even better are the KoolStop "Dura Type" holders with KS pads. The holders are toe-adjustable, which Ultegra generally are not, by means of a spherical washer, so that pad toe-in can be optimized. Nashbar has had them recently for $9.95 per caliper, for holders and TWO sets of pads...
