Folding Bikes - flat tires on dahon

Do you all have any suggestions for tires for a 2005 Dahon Speed8? I think it came with schwalbe big apple tires - but I have had two flat tires in a week. I have only had the bike for about ten days and since I plan on commuting with it - this is of some concern. I like the bike itself, but I ride through some not great places to change a tire (no good place to pull off road, rough neighborhood for a single woman to be preoccupied with tire). I have commuted by bike for a few years on a hybrid and never had a flat tire.

well those tires are supposed to be pretty nice .... I doubt that the flats are tire related... did you had both flats on one wheel ? Can you check if the tape inbetween the rim and the tube is fully covering the spokes and nipples ? I suspect that you might have a rough nipple or potruding spoke .....

take tire and tube off and check it very careful for burrs and sharp thingies

Did u buy the bike at a dealer ? The dealer should check for you.

I would be glad to give it a throughout look through( and fill out the warranty card ), but I am 150 miles east of ST Louis ..... ( well in case you cannot find the problem you could find me at Lake Carlyle on the weekends ..lol .... only 60 or so mile away ...)

Its a great bike and should not be hampered with a faulty tube or a burr

Maybe some tire liners will help. The 2004 Speed P8 has a problem with blown tubes from the deep Vee single wall rims. I believe the 2005 bike has double wall rims so this should not be a problem. If your flats are caused by debris, then try some tire liners and try to avoid the carp in the road as much as possible.

I have had a flat on both the front and the back tires. I took it to my lbs - they checked the tires (and helped me change them - I'm still not real skilled at that - but learning-quickly) - both were on the outside of the tube - not the inside rim - although they did show me how to check the tape on the inside to make sure it wasn't because of some problem with rim/tape/tube. We found nothing on the tire. I hope I just had two bad tubes. Do tire liners go under the tire between tire and tube? Sorry for asking such a basic question . Thanks.

If speed is less of an issue than dependability, thorn resistant inner tubes work well. I hate changing flats in the winter and usually change to these tubes from the late fall through early spring on my recumbent trike.

I have never had a flat with thorn resistant inner tubes, but they do slow you a bit.
