Living Car Free - car free subsection in commuting

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i'm sorry if this has been brought up before but how about a car free living thread. maybe a subsection of the commuting board. while the commuting forum is really cool, individuals going car free have different things going on. it seems that a lot of discussion in the commuting forum is still with the car in mind and the arguments that arise are fun but get in the way of communication. anyway, just a suggestion.
I think it's a great idea. It may seem redundant, but a lot of people on the commuting board do seem to have cars.
I can dig it ;)

Besides going shopping (bags) and on a romantic date (tandem) what more can there be to discuss? Realistically, everybody is, was, or will be care free. Its not that rare or challenging....unless you are a kid an never had to get to work in the morning. What am I missing here?
Agreed. I have been car free my entire life. Pure choice. I don't have much to discuss about it except...well...um....I am car free.

I think a carfree forum is a GREAT idea, heavy on the "how to" since it's easy to think you need a car for everything. For instance, you think you need one to transport a bike. But, if you're picking up a new bike, you can bus or cab or something down there, and ride it back. You can also roll another bike alongside the one you're riding, not that hard for a decent rider (and another reason to turn my bike into a fixie). I run a small biz, and buy packing materials locally but I can also mail order them for the same price. I go around buying stuff too, but most everything I buy fits in a messy bag. If I get something good that's big, I can always pay someone to transport it for me, there's always someone looking for a few extra bux.
What's going to really win people over to going carfree is being heavy on the practical day to day how-to's. Kinda like those home woodworking shows on TV - you never heard Bob Vila diss someone for not knowing something or for having woodwork done for them, instead, his show was for years and years a friendly, welcoming, how-to show that made the average person see that it's possible.

Did you give up your car for good? Is your bike and public transportation the only way you travel from point A to point B? If your only mode of transportation is your bike, discuss your car-free lifestyle here. Learn the nuts and bolts of life without a car, from biycyle dates and grocery shopping, to commuting.
Hm. I never gave mine up because I never had one. I avoid public transportation because it's not as efficient, healthful, and frugal as biking, and seldom as convenient. And I'd like to see a plug in there for raising kids car-free.
Did you keep on riding when everybody else bought cars? Or are you a recovering ex-car owner? Discuss your car-free lifestyle here. Learn the nuts and bolts of living well on less than 1HP, from bicycle dates and grocery shopping, to commuting, to raising kids car-free.

I never had a car either. I feel your non-pain.
