View Full Version : my first race of any kind... ever...
I competed in my first race every on sunday. i began training 2 months ago and bought my first road bike about 6 months ago. I've only been riding for about a year. I'm not a runner... actually I'm a horrid runner. I was surprised by the race pace. It was a 5k, 30k, 5k. Run 1 was 22 min, bike was 1:01 (my computer said 18.2mph avg, championchip said 17.7) then a run 2 of... 32 min. i got off the bike and felt like I was running through waist deep water. I unfortunately haven't been running too much because of nagging IT band syndrome. I placed 66 out of 167 and 7 in my age group. I had a total time of 2:01 (winning time was 1:35 by the 2 time state points winner) Personally I was just glad I finished. Sorry if this seems like I'm rambling, I just wanted to tell others. BTW, I can't wait til June to compete in my first tri.

Hey, I'll take a 22 minute 5K! Doesn't sound so horrid... Good on ya!
Looking at the other times posted, I felt completely out of my league on the run. Thanks for the encouragement though.

It is with deep regret (all right - jealousy) that i have to inform you that running a 5k in 22 min automatically disqualifies you from being a horrid runner.
You simply cannot claim to be one of us (horrid runners) if you continue this most uncharacteristic behavior - shame on you!
But seriously, great job! Best of luck on your tri. BTW, your computer is usually going to be more accurate re your avg bike speed; the chip doesn't account for a small portion of distance travelled (wide turns, passing, etc).
Pay attention toyour IT band pain - could save you the surgery i am even now recovering from.
What type of surgery? I was not aware that IT band syndrome could lead to surgical intervention. But in all honesty the pain lessens after every run and I'm able to run farther and farther without feeling the pain.
Sorry to offend you about the horrid runner part. I'm a decent cyclist but my running lags so far behind my cycling. I really look pretty ridiculous out there. My cycling is precise, and in good form while my running is uncoordinated. If I got better form, I'd probably be a better runner. It is discouraging to see 17 minute splits on some of the runners.

where can I become horid and run 7:20 miles? ;)
Looking at your splits, I'd say you went out a bit hard on the first 5k. you will have some drop off, but the first leg of any multisport event sets you up for the rest. Think of it as banking heart beats.
either way, good job. :)

Horrid runner?!?!?!?!?
An official apology to any one I offended by calling myself a horrid runner. I guess I was comparing myself to the "elite" runners of the upper echelon of my race. Sorry again.

I agree that you are not a horrid runner.
But, I understand your point that you want to be faster. Its all relative.
No matter how fast you get, there will always be guys out there you can't keep up with.
When I swim, most days I feel pretty good as I compare myself to most of the other recreational swimmers in the pool. Then there are the days where I swim in a lane next to a competitive swimmer or one of the tri guys that finishes really well and I get blown out of the pool. I'll be like "dang, I totally need to get my a** in gear." Then I'll come back to my office and this woman I work with who does tri's will ask "what was your time in the pool today" and I'll tell her and she'll say "wow, I wish I could swim that fast." I guess its all about having goals and trying to improve.

Lets join up as a team ..... you get me that 15 minute mile swim you told me about, and i'll get you the 22 minute 5k ??? Ha-Ha

I think you'd be running a lot more than 5k if the swim distance was 1500m.
Picky, picky ..... Ok a 7.5 minute half mile, is that better?

Okay, deal. I only need to drop about 3 and a half minutes. It's the cycling I need help with! But as for the 15 minute mile-swim... just head on over to my neck of the woods when we've got a nice south swell and I'll get you pretty close! Especially if you catch some nice waves on the way in. ;)

No offence taken, just wish i could run that fast - maybe someday.
As to the surgery, i ended up having a z-plasty, where the doctor makes a z-shaped cut (thus the name) and kind of twists it around and reattaches it. Makes it slightly longer, so that it wont rub against the bursa so hard - or actually pop back and forth over the bone, as was my case.
Doctor was not entirely certain that a better stretching regiment employed earlier could have prevented the surgery, but said it was entirely possible.

the sad thing is that 7.5min for 800m is still out of my league. Even 3.75min for 400, or 1.875 for 200m, and my best 100m is 0.9375min... so I'd have to hold that 15 times.
