Well the time has come for me to get a bigger, badder ATV. I ride a Polaris Trailblazer right now and I think its time I step up on the ladder. I have my scopes set on a Polaris Predator but am open to opinions. My mechanic can get me a Predator for dirt cheap but I still have a year to wait.

By the way the kind of terrain I ride is mainly trails and once a year we go the Oregon Dunes. So I want a bike with good ground clearance, reverse, a headlight and an engine over 350 CCs

You're asking this on a cycling forum?

Go for a new mountain bike instead.

The yamaha banshee's (I think) are pretty nice... I was watching this guy on one do some jumps the other day. Cool looking 4-wheeler, and it flies pretty far :P

I used to race years ago, and still keep up with the industry every now and then.

Riding dunes you're going to want an engine that revs high such as a 2 stroke. Since you've been riding Polaris, I'm sure you're already accustomed to the 2 stroke riding style. However, as I understand it, the EPA has madated that all 2 stroke engines are to be phased out of production by 2006, so that's something to consider.

http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/nonroad/2002/f02038.pdf

All manufacturers now produce 4 stroke performance ATVs that will match (if not outperform) 2 strokes. Personally I'd go with the Yamaha YFZ 450, but some close seconds are the Honda 450R, and the Yamaha Raptor. The Raptor has the clear advantage in engine size, but the YFZ/450R are lighter and much more sport oriented (wider A-arms/rear end, shocks w/reserviors, lower stance, etc.) Really depends if you're looking for a sportier machine or one along the lines of the Polaris with a more utilitarian appeal.

Get a Horse. Best ATV out there.

How about I don't get a moutain bike. I'd rather go 90 MPH then 22 MPH. But anyways, ignoring that incompetent fool, I'd rather not get a Raptor...engine is way too big. Banshees have no GC, YFZ 450s are to generic for me, and I don't think they make sand paddles or mud tires for horses. I'd rather get somethin' unique. You don't see many predators around. And like I said above I am looking for a competitive trail bike, I seldom go to the dunes.

But he was in general cycling, I think. Anyway, you hit the nail on the head. The dude needs a two-wheeler, not a four wheeler. 4 wheels are for people who don't know how to balance. the original poster needs to get into motocross.

which reminds me of an old charlie brown book I used to have. charlie wants to get into motocrossing, possibly to impress the red-headed girl. Ends up with a pumpkin for a helmet. great stuff.

Then that metal head could come in pretty handy.

Oh yes I don't know how to balance  I guess I better go and throw away my BMX and cancel my order for my new Kona Stinky Dee-lux. I ride ATVs because first off its alot more fun then riding a dirtbike, dirtbikes are meant for racing and jumping, not dunes or trails. Quads are meant for trails or dunes. And thats what I ride...trails and dunes.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE ADVICE FOR A QUAD THEN GO AWAY!!

im always slightly biased against atvs, im not saying cyclists dont do it too but....often times i see trails trashed by ATV folks here. There are huge "irrigation channels" in the trails. They are loud, a lot of the guys here go and crank up the motor screaming, scaring away the wildlife. I know mtn bikers litter but i dont see them doing these other behaviors as much

..sorry...I'm one of those dudes. But its not the quads that are loud its the damn dirtbikes. Believe me I have been riding since I was frickin' 9. You need to find trials that aren't "attacked" by my type. I have respect for mountain bikers, me being a former mtn biker too...but I think they need to have their own special trails just for them. Us quaders need our own trails too. And I can care less about the frickin' wildlife, its good to scare em' off away from me, don't wanna take a chance and hit a deer at 55 MPH. And the group I ride with doesn't letter, they actaully pick up other people trash, and if you mean tire ruts by "irrigation channels" that is what happens when many riders go over a trail over a long period of time, it helps us turn too.
