Eggbeaters and SPD use different cleats right? I know this is a dumb question, but I'm new to the whole clipless thing.

I have used both but I swear by eggbeaters. The biggest advantage to me is the mud shedding. Using regular eggs I have never had a problem clipping in or clipping out no matter how muddy. I have recently switched to the candy's though just so I would have a platform in those instances that you come unclipped in nasty terrain.

Eggbeaters if you want to be able to ride in any condition...If you ride road only and want a pair of pedals that have tension adjustment, look into SPD.

I am in the same boat... i'm new to the clipless thing. I am considering the Shimano's or the Crank Bros (Mallet or Candys). What is better for mountain trails that have a lot of rough terrain.
I've heard both from a few friends but want more solid opinions.
I was about to get the mallets... What does everyone else use for fairly rough terrain (ruts, jumps, steep downhill, steep uphill, rocks, etc.)????

The candy's give me just enough of a platform to get through the remainder of the technical section without having to clip in. I've never tried the mallets, I guess I am just a little too much of a weight weenie to justify the extra weight.
