View Full Version : What do you do with your laces?

Sometimes I tuck mine into the shoe by my ankle, sometimes I tuck them under the "laced up" part of the laces above the tounge, I have even used extra large rubber bands that went around my shoe, holding the laces in place.

Has anyone found a more elegant solution for keeping laces out of your chain?
(not counting slip on shoes like Van's or velcro fastener types like kangaroos)

by the way, Converse has released some laceless Chuck Tayor Oxfords (http://www.eastbay.com/catalog/productdetail.cfm?model_nbr=61032&sku=1158&SID=8717&inceptor=1)

wearing sneakers i just do a double bow which picks up all the extra slack...

with my real cycling shoes i just pulled off the laces and use only the velcro

am i weird for never even considered doing something with them? i figured the clips/straps would hold them down...oh yeah..and the knot.

put on your shoes, lace them pretty tight, tie them in a triple knot, cut off the extra laces. now you have slip-on's!

the knot doesn't help keep them out of the chain unless it's like a double or tripple (shortening them) and I've never had a toe clip that retained the laces well enough to keep them out of the chain.

I don't know. I just bought a pair of slip on Van's, but I like my lace up shoes better. I was just hoping for an easy solution that was faster than tucking the laces.

dude...velcro shoes...duh...or tie them really far off to the side...or tighten them to where you like, tie off the laces at the eyelet and melt them so they don't unravel...but, i like the velcro shoes..

I have my combat boots straight laced and tie the excess around behind my ankle and then stuff it into the top of my boot

I found laces to be a frustrating distraction. Several times I found them wrapping around the pedals, cranks or sprockets. I tried several solutions recommended in this thread. However, I never was able to assure myself without frequent checks that my pedals weren't going to come to a sudden halt because of the laces.

Though not a solution you wanted to hear - My new shoes just have velcro closures.

i've never had problems with my laces getting caught in the chain. (now that i've said that my chain will most likely rip my laces and shoes off tomorrow)

yeah, I tried a pair on today ($50 retail) they fit loose, even when I went down a full size lower than normal, plus they way they are stitched around the top (to accomodate the elastic I guess) rubs pretty bad.

One pair of shoes I tuck them forward into the toe. The other is straight laced with the laces ending at the toe so I don't have to tuck. The third pair is "normal". I ripped the lace off the left shoe on a pedal to the point where I don't have to worry about it anymore and the right shoe I just tuck them under the clips before I cinch down.

Tie 'em lopsided, so the knot is away from the drivetrain. Then tuck if needed. Luckily, my feet are so wide that I rarely have much lace left.

My Shimano mo57's provide a lovely velcro strap I can close down over the loops. Thank you big "S"!

nothing at all except I can rarely find them on sale in my size, where as I can usually find lace ups in my size on closeout or something. It's not a matter of disliking velcro or slip ons or other alternatives, I was just wondering if anyone had come up with an elegant solution to laces getting in the chain. :)

short laces are hard to tie...and there is really no way to do it and have it look good...but most guys i know that ride ss/fixie have one pant leg rolled up at all times anyways, so if your shoes look a bit odd, i don't think anyone would notice, between the pant leg and the silly hats, i say you're cool...i still say tie them how you want them and cut them off...just don't burn yourself on the shoelace like I did...i'm a dummy...

I'm not eight years old, that's what I have against velcro shoes.

so you'd rather worry about getting your laces ripped off than not worrying at all?
I dunno...I'd rather go with function over fashion, but most velcro shoes you find will be more geared told old folks than eight year olds...

get clipless pedals and some "recreational mtb" shoes. toe clips are for hipsters and noobs. pearl makes some decent looking laced shoes of that variety that have a tuck pocket or cover for the laces, and lake makes several-one of which I use-that have a velcro tab type thing that covers the knot and keeps the laces in place. solved the problem for me. actually I never had the problem, but had I, it surely would have solved it.

Part of not being eight years old is being responsible enough to make sure my laces aren't flopping all over the place when I'm riding. It seems to work out alright.

Enjoy your velcro!

it personally hasn't happened to me in years...i have more trouble with the pant leg than the laces...but that is pretty well taken care of now...whatever works, dude...I think velcro shoes are hilarious, yet another perk, as far as I'm concerned, not to mention they were $5 at a thrift store...

They probally think your jokeing, but I really do ride barefoot. Not to impress strangers, because I can grip the pedal much better that way. Has it's drawbacks.. like crashing becomes a whole lot more painful. Asphalt scrapes when you have your foot too far forward off the leading edge of pedal (big toe always takes the hit on that one)

I tuck them in my shoes. That's the most practical method.

I've tucked, wrapped, and even double-bowed, now what I do is cut them short enough so there's room for either a surgeon's knot if they're flat laces, or a square knot if they're round laces, and hit the ends with a hot soldering iron or some superglue to keep them from fraying. No fuss, no muss.

damn, i've had one shoelace incident and one pantsleg incident in the span of two weeks. must be springtime!

normally i pull through the toes. but when they're corset-laced tight i'll put them in the shoe.

toe clips are not (just) for hipsters and noobs. they're for whoever doesn't feel like wearing bike shoes at any given moment. I have a pair of egg beaters on my pinnarello for when I'm going biking. I have toe clips on my townie for when I'm just riding to school or a movie or somewhere else I don't want to walk around in bike shoes.

I find this lacing works pretty well. just tuck the end into the shoe. it's a lot less likely to come untucked when you take off your shoes.

Let me know when eat **** because you have accidentally unclipped from your awesome pedal system so I can lecture you on the finer points of clips and straps.

i like to tie my shoelaces straight to my pedals, it's basically like riding clipless and it makes me work on my trackstands more.

umm. yeah, I tuck mine inside my shoe (on the outside). Do it when you're tying, and they stay there for most of the day. Just look down every once in awhile/re-tuck. No fuss, no muss.

It's the amazing hidden shoe-knot. really, it's not even close to difficult.

you must have short laces. mine get caught on everything. they stay tucked backwards above the tongue but below the crossing laces.

Several times I found them wrapping around the pedals, cranks or sprockets...I never was able to assure myself without frequent checks that my pedals weren't going to come to a sudden halt because of the laces.

There's a messenger story about this. Running late on a delivery, dude's lace got wrapped around the pedal at the crank. He was only a couple blocks from the drop point, and running very much behind, so he let it go til it completely unscrewed his pedal. Fixed, brakeless and missing a pedal, he guided the bike to the curb and ran the delivery up a few flights of stairs by the 5:00 deadline...with the pedal clanging along on the ground, still wrapped in his shoelace.
