Not so much as hate mail, but more replies as if I had personally attacked the guy.
I don't understand the need to private message me as opposed to debating me on the public forum like everyone else.

When I read something wildly off the mark, foolish, or just plain silly from a known fool, zealot or ranting ideologue, I prefer to ignore it. When I read something foolish from someone who I think has intelligence I might send a PRIVATE MESSAGE to that person so as not to bring up the topic on the entire list. I have found out that it is possible to have a civil discussion with such people (even when we disagree on major points) off line that is far more responsive than obtained on-line with all the attendent static and chatter.
Obviously I misjudged Treespeed's character.

You might want to reread some of your "intelligent" private messages, especially the one where you referred to some as a 'Jack-off', before you start talking about people's character.

Yes, this public discourse is much better than doing this through private messages.
