I was thinking about converting my 1980's Specialized Hardrock to single speed, and had a few questions:

1) Is there a recommended brand of BMX freewheel I should get?
2) What kind of grease should I get for the freewheel?
3) Redishing is a pain, could I just use washers to space the wheel?
4) If I wanted to go fixed later, I know using a lockring and loctite isn't the best idea, but is it really all that bad, especially if I keep my brake?

(Yes, I know I'm a cheap bastard)

1) shimano's are good and cheap

2) Phil grease rocks for everything....well almost ;)

3) If you respace the wheel you will need to redish. If you don't the wheel will not be centered and the universe will implode or something.

4) If you have brakes you will be fine. Great way to test the waters. But you will get hooked and dive head first like the rest of us.

Good Luck

Great!
Now I just have to figure out what gearing I'd be willing to stick with.
