I was involved in a serious crash this past saturday while racing in the final race of the Ohio Valley Spring Series. I was chasing down a breakaway at approximately 25 MPH, when someone swerved in front of me and clipped my front wheel with his rear. I lost control of the bike and hit the tarmac...hard. I was knocked out for a second or two, but I managed to get myself together and drive home. However, due to heavy swelling on my hip, I had my girlfriend drive me to the emergency room. Once there, I waited about two hours to see a doctor, or at least anyone who could diagnose any problems I might have. When the doctor on duty asked me what happened and what hurt, I first told him about my scraped up knees and my hip. However, once I mentioned the fact that I had hit my head and was consequently knocked out, he ordered that I take a CAT scan. Funny enough, I didn't see that as the major problem. When you've got what looks like a small purple brain growing on the side of your body, you tend to take that much more seriously than any "invisible" damage.

Unfortunately, the scan showed two minor blood "spots" on my brain and I was interred overnight for observation. Luckily, the spots never manifested themselves in any form of malignancy and I was released on monday at noon. I'm just glad that I had a steady stream of visitors that kept the time flying and a girlfriend who was more than happy to run to my house to get me REAL food. I'm sorry, but never am I so desperately hungry that I'll break my semi-vegetarian diet in order to eat a shriveled slice of roast beef with gravy, even if it's supposedly nutritious per the advice of one of the nurses. Ewww.

But in all seriousness, without any doubt, I feel that I would be dead or a near vegetable if I had crashed without wearing a helmet. Everyone can be rest assured that my next helmet will be a Giro, most likely a Pneumo. Their lids pass the acid test, so to speak.

Luckily nothing was broken, and the swelling has gone down considerably. I'd say that I'm almost recovered. I can't wear my tight hipster jeans yet, but I felt good enough to spend 45 minutes on my fixed-gear and another 1.5 hour on the indoor trainer yesterday. Considering that I spent three days off of the bike, I have to exorcise the demons somehow.

I feel your pain, buddy. A pedestrian walked in front of me and I crashed hard (no helmet). I had both a subdural and epidural hematoma (the "blood spots" you were talking about), fractured skull and bilateral pleural effusion. That bought me 8 days in the hospital and 2 CT scans a day. This happened the first week in April and I'm still waiting to get back on my bike. It sucks and I hope you feel better. Thank God for insurance though...hospital bill...$35,000.

I was actually training for one of the OVR races when that happened. Needless to say I didn't make it to the race. :D

Glad to hear you checked out OK and are on the mend. Even better to hear another helmet success story. It's easy to brush off helmets with something like "my head, my choice," but it really isn't that simple. I'll bet your girlfriend was super happy your helmet did its job.

Yea I'd say that with those skid marks on your helmet it's a good thing you had it on. Your eye don't look so great either. It really sucks when some one cuts in on you like that. Get well...

Last weekend, my helmet saved my head as well in a race. Bumped wheels and went down...

Thats not good, glad to hear you are ok. I too wacked my head good in a race 2 weeks ago and was unconscious for a while, and conseuently had a sezuire. they dont know why i had the seziure, probably just because i hit my head so hard. I dont remember any of it which is kind of werid not being able to remember a good 1 hour chuck of your life.

sitting in the hospital i couldnt help but think about how people raced without helmets, crazy.

You know... Cliff and I never did see you in that race. What category where you riding? I sent you and email back a few days ago wondering how you were so I'm glad to read everything's okay. So they kept you at the hospital all day Sunday too? That sucks but I'm guessing it was for a good reason. Glenn and the gang at Campus should be able to help you out with the helmet and then we'll be sure to take advantage of your soreness and drop you when you show up for the next group ride. j/k We'll be happy to have you back, so get better soon and we'll see you for the regular Tues/Thurs rides with your new helmet.
