BMX - Rear free wheel, whats better?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yes to get more speed realy fast whats better? Lower amount of teeth like 14-15 or 17-20? 16 is the standard rate. I know one makes u acelerate slower and more top end. Im dont know :'( Help pweeez :)

If you have a 39 tooth chainring, you'll probably use about a 17 tooth sprocket in back. About a 2.3 : 1 ratio is standard I think. You can get more of a top end by increasing the chainring size or decreasing the sprocket size. For instance, a 39-13 will be harder to get moving than a 39-17, but you'll be able to go quite a bit faster.
Lately, people seem to be using more compact chainrings and more compact sprockets, like 30-11 or even 25-9. It saves weight, but supposedly decreases the life span of drivetrain parts compared to larger parts...

If you want acceleration, you would get a 36t sprocket with a 16t freewheel.if you want speed, try a 44:13 gear

are you on CRACK???!!!!!!! thats not even close to the gear ratios.....they are...... 44-16 39-14 36-13 33-12 30-11 28-10 and 25-9 and if you are a little guy then you might want to run a little less teeth in the front since you have less weight to push through transitions....for example... 33-14 or a 40-16 or 43-16 and..youll need a Flip-Flop hub to go to 14,13 tooth in the back and a cassette hub if you want to go lower than 13 tooth in the back

No, i am on pot. I don't think he wanted standard gear ratios. I think he wanted gears for acceleration or top speed

44:16 is standard (2.75:1)
Add a tooth or two on the front sprocket and you accellerate slower, but have more top speed.
Subtract a tooth or two on the front sprocket and you accellerate quicker, but have a slower top speed.
For the rear it's just the opposite.
Add a tooth or two and you accellerate quicker but have less top speed.
Take a tooth or two off the freewheel and you accellerate slower, but have a higher top speed.
I would stick with the standard 2.75:1 ratio until I was sure that I needed more accelleration or more top speed.

if you want to go realy fast get a 45-14. thats what im ruuning on my race bike. it hauls balls. but you have to have AA legs to pull it off.

ya, thats a crazy ratio i looked up the distance per pedal and junk and its really good.....

well, whatever you do. DO NOT USE A SHIMANO FREEWHEEL.
unless you enjoy bashing your knees into the bars.

Shimano freewheels are really nice, what are you talking about...i have a 14t Shimano right now and ive had it for like 3 years...and have had no trouble...

As usual, no goddamn clue. A 14 in back is normal for a 39 up front.

ya, like queensrider pointed out to me, this kid wants gear ratios that go fast...so ya
41-14 is fast as hell for racing so is 44-16
44-16 used to be the standard that everyone ran in the 80's. Does anyone have any experience with the ACS 14/15 freewheel?

I've never actually seen someone use the 15-tooth ACS, but I've seen plenty of ACS 14-tooth freewheels blow up. Then again, they were being used for freestyle riding rather than racing, so they were taking direct hits from concrete, wood, metal, and the like.
They sell one that's got a 14T and a 15T on the same freewheel. I'd have to get a smaller chainring to use it, but it seems like a good idea for my wife's bike, as sometimes the gearing she has is too much, other times not enough.

Do you mean a hub that can use either a 14t or 15t freewheel, or a 14/15t two-speed freewheel? If you mean the latter, then, no, I've never actually seen it in action.
Yeah, it's a 2 speed freewheel. By the way, we went out to our local BMX track today, but they were doing work, so we couldn't ride. We ended up at a little jump spot in an old quarry in the bush. After 20 years off a BMX, I finally got my groove back, and started getting real smooth off the jumps. I suppose there's hope for my racing career after all.

i run a 16t ACS Fat Claw freewheel in back and a Redline Chromo 39t in front...it works great for me cuz i can accelerate fast and still have some top end when i want to run from the neighbor's dog

i had this ratio for a month or two when i blew out my 14T freewheel and that was all i had. it accelerates faster but takes more effort and you have a slower top speed

yah umm ok i dont understand how the f**k you would blow out a freew wheel since 90% ov them are made os steel and they are almost completly sheilded by your frame i just dont understand, un less u guys can pedal you bike 100 mph its almost literally impossible unless its all rusted to sh*t even then i rode a rusted to sh*t old 17 tooth freewheel for a year and i ride hard and fast and it never broke or gave me any trouble but i did run a 39 tooth sproket so it was in a very easy gear but even still i find that hard to believe that a freewheel could blow out before your chain would snap

frame dropouts aren't huge anymore. some dropouts don't even cover 9 tooth drivers. i never even seen anybody blow out a freewheel. i don't know many people with freewheels.
I think by "Blow out" he means break it. Geez, happens all the time in racing. I've seen guys smoke their back tire when the gate drops. The freewheel is the weak link.

its just where the freewheel slips when you pedal (i call it blow out) and then it skips and wont engage right...
