Hi all who come here,

I am new to this forum, and I couldn't find a post about something I can't describe in words that well. I have bought a new mountain bike and straight away the bottom bracket kept coming loose. I kept complaining and the replaced it and all seems well with that. Now, there is a noise occurring when I try and put the power down going up a hill or something even slight too. This is a crackling sort of noise coming from either the front or back cog area, it happens on each revolution of the crank at the bottom of one of the pedals cycle. Is this normal? What should I and shouldn't I hear? It didn't do this when I got the bike, and it is kind of annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Jason

JasonWhy not just take it back where you got it and let them sort it out, since you don't even know exactly where it's coming from. It's not normal and all anyone here can do is guess.

I would take it back to the shop (yes, again) and have them watch/listen to you put your mettle to the pedal. Possible problems could be are: a cracked bottom bracket shell or weld, loose crank bolts, loose chainring bolts. or if the noise is comming from the back wheel area it could be a cracked axle. I'm guessing your bike is aluminum, just from the crackling noise you described.
It's probably an undertighted bottom bracket. As the shell and bottom bracket flex against each other, especially on aluminum bikes, an undertighted BB will sometimes make a creaking/crackling noise.

Good luck

Yeah, it's not a loud noise, but if you say even a small noise ain't normal, then I'm inclined to take your advice and take it back again.
