Bicycle Mechanics - help with cassette

Hi all,
I just today got a used giant rincon bicycle, anyway when riding it I noticed that that it rides really bad, upon investigation I realized that the cassete (or freehub I really don't know the difference it a 15 speed bike) is stiff and doesn't let the wheel move well, my qes is cananyone tell me step by step intructions how to remove the cassette (or freeehub), I have a chain whip. Please help. Thanks.

how did you decide it's the cassette body causing the problem? Just by picking up the bike and spinning the wheel?

Is it not just the brakes rubbing?

Try taking the wheel out of the bike and spinning it in your hands, allowing the cassette to spin with the wheel. If the wheel still spins like crap, it might be the hub/cones and not the cassette body.


Are you sure the cassette doesn't have 8 cogs?

I took the wheel off, as soon as I take the wheel into my hand and hold it on its sides by the free wheel the wheel turns slow and somes to a quik stop that is to quik. When I let go of the free wheel and hold thee wheel by its axels the wheel turns smooth and fine.

Spray WD-40, or penatrating oil of your choice, into the freewheel. Spin the freewheel until you feel it free up and spin better. Then, pour machine oil, or 30 weight motor oil, into the freewheel until it quites down some.
