Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - 7610 D/A or 7710?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was at the Kalavinka shop in Tokyo today, and they recommended the old 7610 BB over the 7710. I'm worried about part availability for the 7600 series. Anyone have any experience with both?
Sorry, no experience with Shimano BB, but how much are the Dura-ace high-flange track hubs over there?

there are some 7600 36 hole hubs on ebay right now.
Well, first the 7610 is square taper and the 7710 is splined. The 7610 works great with Sugino track cranksets since its the right axle length of 109mm.
The 7610 is scarce in the US. I got the last 7610 English BB that Business Cycles had I believe. Their remaining stock is Italian threading. I think I paid ~$80.
I tried sourcing another one to no avail so far.
The next best alternative is of course Phil Wood.

Damn, keep that on the down low...please. ;)

I've got a 7600 series DA bb, and it works great - square taper, smooth, cartridge and pretty low maintence. Never had a 7710 or any splined bb for that matter, so I can't compair much. I don't think 7600 stuff is too difficult to find, so buy now and stuff them in your mouth like a little chipmunk until you need extras.

Uh-oh, are we gonna have a duel of the wallets?

as for 7700 road d-a bottom brackets... a lot of people don't like them because the bearings are exposed. i went with an 6500 ultegra one on my road bike. i don't know if the track 7710 bb has the same issue. probably though.

That and they require that screwed up lockring wrench and futzing to adjust the load just right.
That said, I have one on my roadie and it's a darn light BB.

I have the 7710 for the last few years. Really good BB and just swithced over from the Cinelli to the Colnago. I ride in all conditions almost everyday and not a peep from the BB.
Parts can't be mixed and matched, can they? The 7610 and 7710 have slightly different spindle lengths, so this would screw up the chainline I would think.

7610 uses a standard square taper spindle and the 7710 uses shimano's proprietary octalink spindle. so no, you can't mix and match 7710.
i've got a set of 7600 cranks and high flange hubs (32h double fixed) sitting around waiting for a nagasawa. if anyone wants to buy me one i'll let you ride it.

bumping this thread in hopes of some help:
frame i just got has shimano d/a 7610 bb in it. i'd like to remove it, and put in my campy bb and cranks. i called my mom to see if my tools were still around in her garage and she said "nope, tossed that junk 5 years ago". does anyone in sf have tools to remove campy cranks and bb, and also remove the shimano bb? i'll only need them for a night and can trade beer or a blunt or something. i'll be gentle on them too. and if you have an hour to hang around my apartment and help i'll order a pizza and put on a record for ya or something. any help is greatly appreciated.

i have tools, and if you bring a sixpack over to my place you can do it here. got a bikestand too.
(the fixed-cup might be an issue tho; depends on how cranked-down it is)
another option is to go over to freewheel hayes; i think it's $10 for a one-day membership, or $30 for 6 months.
