I was on my trainer the other night watching a training video. At one point, I dropped into my aero bars for a five minute interval. The coach on the video was constantly stressing the fact that the racer's back should be flat and as motionless as possible. I had never really paid attention to this myself. The biggest reason being that I cannot see my own back while I am riding. So, I decided to take a peak in a mirror. I was shocked by what I saw. My back stays fairly flat while I am in my aerobars. I am 6'5" so a completely flat back is a lot to ask. However, while pedaling I have a TON of movement in my back. My back seems to rock side to side like a sinking ship. This can't be good. Any suggestions?

It may be your position on your trainer, as you may not be leaned all the way forward onto your bars as you would be on your tri bike? Your legs should do all the work for you so no other muscles above your waist should be actively straining at all. Nonetheless, your back will tend to move a little as your legs crank.

A lot has to do with the fact that when you're riding outside, your bike will rock and move even though you are perfectly still on the bike. When you're on the trainer, something has to move... most likely, it'll be you.
