Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - new grand mighty cranks from ebay

OK. so I picked up a new sugino grand mighty crank and 50T sugino gigas chain ring on ebay. I was previously riding some bulletproof cranks. Is there anything special about installing them? I just took the old cranks off with a crank puller and put these ones on. I couldn't wait to get them on the bike

50x16 is a little harder on the hills, but it's nice and fast.

Nothing special. Just grease up the bolts' threads and make sure you get them (the bolts) in there nice and tight.

what taper do bulletproof cranks use? I'm guessing you're using the wrong taper bottom bracket.

bulletproof cranks use the square taper bottom brackets. the sugino cranks use the same. I just wasn't sure how to properly secure the cranks to the bike. I rode them for a while tonight and they didn't fall off, so I guess they are ok.

If they're like sugino 75's then they aren't intended for a jis taper. People do it, but if I had such pretty cranks as the grand mighty's I would probably go for the proper taper.

No i don't mind. I was watching sugino 75 cranks on ebay and they were going for around $100 used. I saw the new grand mighty crank, which is supposed to be higher quality, and got it for 167. The sugino gigas chain ring was 150, but it's got a really nice chrome polish and 50T seemed like a good size. The seller said the gigas chain rings go for around $300, but I haven't been able to confirm that. It's pretty.

I was planning to buy the stuff new anyway so I saved a few bucks and got some nicer components by shopping around on ebay.

oh damn. I didn't know that. So I have them on the Shimano square taper bottom bracket now and I should use the sugino bottom bracket? those are a little pricey so I should probably wait now that I have dropped 3 bills already. is it possible to damage the cranks by leaving them on this jis taper (not sure was jis means). The guy who sold them to me said they would fit fine on a square taper bottom bracket.

I think that the Sugino BB taper is the same as Campy... They work kind of, but it's the reason I'm running road cranks right now instead of my Sugino 171's... I'd rather have my cranks on all the way, and the suginos don't fit all the way with a standard road taper...

This man speaks the truth. We had a similar discussion a while back and I did a little research. Sugino used ISO taper at one point in time but have since switched to JIS. I actually have in my posession some old sugino road cranks that are ISO and my Sugino 75's are definitely not ISO.

Hmmm...I've got Sugino VP road cranks circa 1986. Put them on a Shimano BB circa 1999 and had no problems. In fact, it was the BB's second set of sugino cranks.

What was Sugino using in 1986? JIS or ISO?
