I have a spare carbon fibre seatpost, and think it would work great on our tandem, but I'm wondering just how strong they really are. Am I asking for trouble? It's off a Giant CRX. Input would be appreciated.

Don't have an answer for ya but I was wondering how one would work for the stoker. I saw on a bike on ebay. Made me think a bit.

Captain & stoker positions have Easton EC-70 seatposts on both road tandems; no issues in two years of use. Can't comment on off-road applications as we're pretty happy with our very robust Thomson seatposts.

Pillot and stoker seatposts are c/f . . . no problems after 7,000+ miles on our tandem.

I swore off steel and plastic for this bike, but it's looks like I may be tempted to give it a try, unless someone posts some catastrophic anecdote. Thanks for your input.

I'd be concerned about two things:
1) Stem clamp. Even if the stem were well-deburred, some CF posts have only a limited range where they're supposed to be clamped (AL insert on limited length inside).
2) All the forces a captain's seatpost undergoes - more than a half bike.
And I've heard stories of catastrophic handlebar failures, so I'd be wary with CF under the captain. After all, if the captain falls off, stoker is sure to follow!
But that said, I'd also be curious if this is for road or mountain. I hear Stapfam has bend many seatposts on his mt. tandem. I don't see a response from him; I'd like to hear what he has to say.

What would you do? Carbon Seat post or Suspension seat post?
You folks running the carbon seat posts I assume your frames are aluminum? Does the Carbon seat post really make that big of a difference? Just curious as in my 15 years of cycling (single bike) on road/dirt I have never used one but have always been curious.

I don't like the idea of a suspension post for me, as the captain. And our bike is titanium. THe post I have now is black, and very scratched from the stoker stem, but I have a new stoker stem, with a different clamp design as well. I'll probably give the clamp surface a good polishing before I use it.
