I'm rather new to racing, and I wanted to know how pacelines and other big-group oriented things like that work. I know why , with the wind being cut into by the leader of the pack for everyone else. When I'm on the team training race, I'm finally able to just stay with the end of the line. If I follow it hard and long enough, with my understanding, I figure I will eventually end up at front, right? Then 50 or so revs later, I pull off and rotate back, right? This is what I think, but I really would like to know before I end up sticking with the line long enough to end up at front.

Also, just how do many-a race maneuvers take place? I figure that inside teams, parts are doled out just like any other team- to use an American Football relation, there's the QB (think Lance A on Postal), many other supporting players, and the linemen (almost any domestique), right? But how do opposing teams almost spontaniously start cooperating in the middle of a race? I kind of figure to take on a common enemy, but (another American sport analogy, this one Baseball) we'll never see the Chicago White Sox and the Cubs put together an "All-Chicago" team to take on the Yankees for the World Series. It doesn't make large amounts of sense.

If someone can explain how I can live, thrive, and survive in a sport that goes seemingly against everything in modern American phys. education to a modern American, I would be greatly greatful.

Thanks,
Matt (one of the many there seem to be on the Forums)
