Sitting here this morning, reading the commuting thread, I hear over the radio;
Two young boys were killed on their bicycles in two differant incidents. One in downtown Detroit the other in Dearborn Hts. Both boys, about 8 years old, were killed by speeding motorists running red lights and the cars just took off afterwards, so far they have not caught the people who did it.
This stuff sickens me.
The people were probably ruishing home to watch this weeks installment of Desperate Housewives or whatever their primetime drug is and killed two children. I swear there should be stiffer penalties for small traffic infringements. Speeding and running redlights are so common anymore that the police don't even ticket for it and people get so used to it that **** like this happens.
ugh

small traffic infringments? I hardly call this a small trafffic infringement, two kids were killed, I call it murder, and I hope they catch the SOB's behind this and give them a harsh sentence, but they will probably get a slap on the wrist.

Slap on the wrist? No. Doubt that, though if the victim were an adult, it wouldn't surprise me. The challenge is finding the *******s who did it, which will probably never happen.

I don't think he meant that the two incidents were small traffic infringements. I'm sure he meant that the cops should be ticketing drivers more frequently for infringements to prevent drivers from going through red lights and stops signs, speeding, tailgating, driving while talking on the phone, etc. Dead bicyclists and children will not slow drivers down but tickets that cost money in both fines and increased insurance costs and possible loss of license may.

If you happen to see articles about this in the paper or online please post it in this thread. Thank You.

All lights should have cameras to ticket people who burn the red, they should also take 2 photos at a 1/4 sec interval to check the speed. I often go through red lights on my bike, but only after I have checked that the way is clear. Motorists who go through, put their foot to the gas when they see the yellow.

Get out there and poster, get out there and flyer, make a stink so it gets on the news.

As one poster said, I think the penalties for smaller traffic infringements should be stiffened. Around here speeding is not even considered illegal, or so it seems.

Update:

They found the car that killed th 8yr old boy in Detroit, no word on the driver though but the local news said a witness saw three young men in the car. The news also showed where they dragged the kid/bicycle under the car for what looked like 30+ yards, I almost puked when I saw it last night.

http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/4466721/detail.html
The kid in Dearborne was hit while crossing legally at a crosswalk. A right-turn-on-red driver hit him. Who wants to bet that the driver never looked right when making the turn? I see it every day going home, people making right turns on red ONLY look left for oncoming traffic. And here is what gets my goat, on the news last night they said that no charges have been filed for the child hit in Dearborn Hts. WTF?????

pj7, sorry about that, I guess I didn't quite understand what you posted right away, my apologies. You are correct, the cops should be ticketing drivers more frequently for driving infractions.

no need to apologize, my first post was a little half-cocked and somewhat incoherant anyhow as I was not in the best of moods after hearing the story
