Okay, yes I do realize "friendly insurance company" is an oxymoron of sorts.
Recently I recieved my auto insurance bill, the insurer wants $486.00 for the next 6 months. Today I checked my car trip odometer and found the year to date mileage to be 342 miles, this is largely due to the fact that I bicycle commute. Unfortunately, the vehicle is a necessity so I will be paying well over a buck a mile for insurance.
While the insurance industry gives discounts to motorist for things that are recognized to reduce the incidence of claims and the amount payed out for insurable losses, the reduced mileage deduction isn't proportional to the mileage reduction.
Does anyone know of a bicyclist "friendly insurance company" that gives a discounted rate based on mileage driven? It stands to reason that if I put < 1,000 miles a year on my car, the odds of my causing the insurer to pay a claim are far less than an everyday driver logging 10's of thousands of miles a year.
...and yes, I will let them check my odometer for annual mileage, but I'm not driving to their office, they'll have to send someone to the house ;)
