Classic & Vintage - Anyone Got Any Advice on This Bike...

early 70's bike boom bike. (CR list archive has one hit
that bike was mentioned in 1972 bicycling magazine).
Gian Roberts components were appropriate for bike boom
italian bikes. Not the best components out there, but it
was "italian" mostly mid level componentry although they
did market some better gruppos. Don't know much more
than that. You might post on CR list, that and wait for the
heavyweights to chime in.

I would agree with the seller's opinion. If this frame has any heritage of value (I don't know if it does), the components do not, and are mid to low-market items from the early 70's, perhaps. The center pull brakes are from that period; the pedals are throw-aways now. The wing-nut style quick release was a cheap replacement for the old standby 1/2" nuts on axles. The crank is an old steel one w/a cotterpin - common back then. Brake levers look like generic mass-market versions. The rear cassette dates the bike to the early 70's too - 5 spd.

Unless the frame is some kind of retro treasure, this bike doesn't have a lot going for it - in my humble opinion, of course.

In answer to your question - does anything have to be changed....Looks to me like just about everything SHOULD be changed, but I don't think you want to replace THOSE parts - they're rather average.

Well, I'm not a professional rider, much less average. This is really just a bike to get me started for awhile while I save money. Get me around campus/town and the such while at school. I will be fixing it up for sure as I might be working at a bike shop this summer (hopefully) and will be getting advice on it from there. I purchased it knowing that it would probably have flaws, but hopefully rideable. It was cheap and fixing it up would only enhance what I would learn from riding. Thanks a bunch and more info is greatly appreciated.

I saw that and thought it might make a fun fixed or single speed conversion.

I want a fixed bike when everything is said and done and I have money to pay for it. So... who knows...

CR is the common abbreviation for Classic Rendezvous. It's a subscription e-mail list of people who agree to keep discussions on the topic of 1983 or earlier lightweights, or "Keeper of the Flame" bikes (lugged steel bikes made since 1983 by small builders). Did you go with the digest form of the list?
if not prepare for alot of e-mail. The only downside
to the digest is by the time it arrives alot of the For Sale
stuff is already gone.
