Hey, I'm looking to make my first "good" bike purchase (ie: not a clunker from Wal-Mart)... I've been looking around for something good for a College student (some roads, some even fields, curbs, stairs, uneven pavement, etc). I found the 2005 Noavara Buzz at REI to be very nice, and it is current on sale for about $500, down from $650.

In short, I was hoping someone could point me towards a (few) equivalent bikes that are not from the REI store brand that I can compare it to? I'm looking to spend 500 or less, really... and looking for an 'urban commuter' bike, as stated above. Does anything offer the same features for the same price?

I don't really have any problem buying from REI, I'm not an anti-corp zealot or anything, I just want to shop around, and since Novara isn't offered anywhere else, its hard to compare.

Thanks in advance,
brett

I just bought a Marin Novato (http://www.marinbikes.com/bicycles_2005/html/bikes/bike_specs/specs_novato.html). I love it... very fast, but I can put wide knobbies on it if I want. You might want to check it out.

Lists for about $600 US. No discs, but it is disc ready. Not sure how the shimano Deore components commpare to the SRAM stuff on the bike you're looking at.

Another vote for the Jamin CODA Sport........I ride mine hard and they are priced reasonably.

i got a marin muirwoods about a month ago - it's one step down from the novato, and only cost me 370. i love it. I also tried the Buzz, but the Marin fits me better...
