IM new to the mountain bike hobby so I dont know, why is the gel bad?
You sink into it and push/rub on pressure points and things that shouldn't be pushed on... firm saddles are usually designed to only contact areas of the body that can handle the pressure comfortably, or at least more comfortably.
Go to a bike shop, tell them you need a saddle. They will let you try another if it doesn't work out for you. Btw, it takes a couple weeks of riding to toughen up your butt no matter what saddle you're riding; if you haven't been riding for a while.
