Road Cycling - first serious rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Have a new Specialized Allez A1 Sport 27 that took a while to get the proprer fit and saddle.Friday was able to ride 14.5 miles at an average speed of 16.3 mph. Today rode 11.4 at 17.0 mph average (in the rain). The terrain was fairly flat with a few moderate hills(Birmingham,Al). A few observations. Definitely will go with clipless pedals soon. Also,it is not as easy as it looks. After mountain biking for 2 1/2 years I thought I would be able to jump on a road bike and go for a couple of hours from the start. Not gonna happen! Am enjoying the new ride and will continue to give both bikes plenty of use. BTW,I am 42 years old,5'10",185#.

aaaaa
Kept everything stock, just getting the proper fit and a new saddle took longer than I hoped. Feels very good so far. I think the frame is very good for a cycle in that price range. Any suggestions on clipless pedals and shoes? Thanks!

Congrats on your new Specialized. I was also surprised to find how different riding a road bike was from riding an ATB. You really feel everything and it does take some getting used to.
I ride both bikes but more often I'm riding the road bike now that I'm more experienced with it. Riding with gloves helped quite a bit. Hand fatigue can really affect the whole ride.
