Stunt kites? Were you in OBX? I'm headed there next week.

Also, congrats! I was starting to creep out of the 38" waist and into somethin bigger before starting my routine.

Madopa, yes OBX. Jockeys ridge is where I like to fly, Nags Head. Right across from kitty hawk kites. (OBX = Outer Banks NC for you that do not know). Choqunicha beach is another spot, MP 23
I have 12 stunt kites :) You could say I am addicted. That dune is a great place to fly single lines, dual line or quads. Here is a shot of my Eclipse SUL Eclpse (http://homepage.mac.com/silver300m/nnkite/photo%20pages/eclipse.html) My website is a bit of a mess as I am totally revamping the site as I have the available time. Have 3 GB of photo's from I vacation to process.

Thanks, I was busting out of my 42's in April. Feels great to get into the smaller size. 15 more to go till I hit my target weight.

I thread in the Road Cycling forum got me thinking that I may be working against myself. After my runs and longer rides I drink an Endurox R4 which has the 4:1 carb/protien ratio and about 270 cal per serving to help muscle recovery and stop muscle damage...but is it slowing my fat burning? Should I kill the R4 and just drink water (FWIW I drink at least 64 oz of water per day as well)? Thoughts?

Hi all...new to this thread! Trying to loose a few before training for a TNT (http://www.teamintraining.org) Century in Spring...anyhow:

Question: Does anyone know of a good calculation for body weight-to-distance/avarage MPH to calorie burning for cycling?
There seem to be alot of calculators out there for the 150Lb person, of which I am not(yet!)

Thanks

Grasschopper: I just ride to lose weight. I only drink water, does not speed up recovery, but I am not focusing on racing right now just losing weight. I never did drink sports drinks after the fact, even when I was thinner. But someone in my build, ie heavy, does not need the extra calories. JMO

Lufty, not I but I am sure someone here does.

John M - Thanks for the comment. I think I will go a week or so without the drinks (Also use Accelerade or Gatorade on rides) and see what happens.

Hey Grasschopper, I would recommend at least drinking Propel sports water on your rides of any length over ~20 miles. It is important to keep your electrolytes balanced. Only drinking water over longer distances will tend to knock them out of balance. Also it will help your body to make the most of your water to hydrate better.

My two cents on this one is that water is the best way to go. I've always had a weight problem (and probably always will) and one of my big weaknesses was that I was drinking all my calories. So, what I did was switch to calorie-free drinks (mostly Crystal Light as I'm not much of a pop drinker). Anyways, I figured that getting rid of that useless sugar would do my body good, but there was no significant difference. After a year of this, I read an article about how the human body can build resistances to sugar substitute products and this will prevent weight loss. Anyways, I switched to water and within the next two months dropped 15 lbs. I didn't increase my physical routine and my diet remained the same.

Cool! So, was this ride through the "hill country" any where Llano? Or perhaps Killeen?
I was born in Killeen and my family tree goes back to Llano for several generations.

Oh Yeah, I remember you saying that you had family down my way. We were 50 miles southwest of Killeen in Burnet. Llano is less than 30 miles to Burnet. If you ever come down for trip maybe we can go ride. Lots of great place to ride around here.

Just checkin in here. Weighed in this morning at 200 even. Haven't seen 200 in a long time. Down from 258 July 2003. Bought a new bike in August as an early reward. Bought a Burley Koosah recumbent. Sure is great riding without pain.

Hey rockygnr, good job on the weight loss! So, how do you balance on a recumbent? I've alwasy wondered about that!

rockygnr
09-06-04, 01:04 PM
Well it is different than my upright bike. But after about 5 awkward minutes you get the hang of it. I think it looks more awkward than it is. I really notice different muscles being used. I feel it in the legs and abs. At first I was a little concerned about being different and what it might look like. And then I realised that looking different was what I really was about. LOL.

Thanks for the info, rockygnr. I guess its kind of like learning to pilot a tandem, only without havng the communication issues with a new stoker.

Yeah, don't worry about being different. When I see a "bent" rider, I always think, "How cool is that machine!" Besides, I am a firm believer in joy of riding comes before fassion. If it gets you out and riding, It is a good thing. :D

Way to go on the weight loss. I saw a lot of the recumbent style bikes on a century ride I did back in March. I think they cool… they look like a lot of fun.

Thanks N7CZ,

That is a much better calc then what I've seen, plus I can gauge my cal burn per my weight MUCH better. That calc seems to give my thought that 1500 calorie per day diet, plus the 16.5 mile comute realistic for my weight loss goals for Spring training. I'll keep you guys posted how it works out(although I'm a little warry of the 16.5 to 33 mi per day 3-5x a week on 1500 cals and not LOOSING it!).

Hey Lufy. Glad I could help.
1500 calories per day sounds a little on the low side to me for your "projected" activity level. I was on an 1800 calorie per day diet from my diabetic doctor. Have you checked with a Diatition or your doctor? It is not wise to go onto a restriction like you are talking about without medical supervision.

Good luck!

Bob

I mentioned it to my Dr. a while back, and he said sure, but warned me that 1500 would be low with long rides, and to increase carbs when doing that. So far I'm at about 1600-1800cals...no burnout yet!

According to our cheapo bathroom scale, I've lost about 15 pounds since I started daily commutes in early June. (About 70 miles per week.) I've lost a bunch of body fat (wife says I'm much more defined) and gained significant rock-hard-ness in my thighs. Wife also says I have nice legs. :p

Haven't changed my eating habits at all. 6'2" and 190-195 pounds.

congrats to both of you. Like you guys, I have lost 43 lbs since April 18th, 2 pants sizes and 2 shirt sizes. Feels good and still losing. Looking for 10 more to make my goal weight. Lots more muscle, legs are more defined and I feel tons better. I get lots of nice comments from my office mates. This helps!

I actually got my first comment from a family member about "looking great" tonight!!! Also, today, I bought my first bit of spandex. I swore I would never wear the stuff, but I found a great deal on some winter tights, and plan to ride all winter, and when I tried them on, they didn't look all that bad, so I am going to give them a try. If nothing else, at least it will be entertaining for the cars driving by!

Hey Kat! We look forward to the photos! Just remember, we are all, "works in progress."

I'm sure the lycra tights will work well for you. One thing I have noticed about wearing cycling specific clothes is that it helps mentally. I feel more like I belong on the bike. It may sound silly, but it helps me to get motivated. Changing into them shifts a mental gear which prepares me for the ride. I have talked this over with Pshychologists at work. They said that there is some validity to this approach.

Good work on the loss! Oh, yeah, I can't wait to the the Vermont pics in the commuting forum. It has been a long time since I have been in VT in the fall!

I just started cycling with my new Allez. I noticed someone mentioned an ELMM diet (Eat Less, Move More). I've been doing something similar... but I am not eating much less. I've just tossed out any unhealthy foods out of my diet completely. Making sure I'm getting all the nutrients, minerals, etc. that I need and not overeating.

Trying to get at least 10 miles a day in on Monday-Friday and then a longer ride on Saturday.

I am 6'1" at 200lbs right now and I hope to get back to around 175. I'll see how this all works out -- I'm already feeling a lot better.

Finally!! I lost 2 pounds after biking 2 months, about 40-50 miles a week. I knew I had trimmed my torso, and my legs were building up, but it was sooo discouraging not to see a change on the scale. Yay for me! I'd like to lose 10 pounds more. That would be awesome.

I wouldn't mind staying at 200 but replacing all that fat with muscle. :D

Replacing fat with muscle. :D

:) Yeah, see, that's the thing. I know I've lost a lot more weight in body fat than the scale says. But my legs have turned to coiled springs and cables, offsetting the fat loss.

Not that I was ever really "overweight", but all that subcutaneous stuff has gone away, leaving only a slowly-shrinking beer reservoir around my midsection. (Hey, I'm not giving up beer.) I think I've gone from a 36 waist to a 32. Not too bad. I've had to poke new holes in my belt. Twice.

im strugglin. i ride abour 50-60 miles per week, take in approx 2000 calories per day and have lost 10 pounds in a month.

The way I figure, if you sit on the couch for 12 solid hours, your body will burn 1500 calories. I take in 2000 and burn off about 1000 during a 1.5 hour ride (15.0 mph avg)

Am I not in a calorie deficit? Shouldnt I be loosing?

I eat Subs and cereal and drink a ton of water, no soda no snacks

Im 204 and July 30 I was almost 220

Am I doing the right thing?

Help!
lol
thx

10 pounds in a month is not bad. Typically 1 to 2 pounds of weight loss per week is considered safe, at least that's what they tell me in my nutrition class.

I think you also need to consider that you've probably lost more in body fat, but it doesn't show on the scale due to increased muscle mass which is a good thing.

Here are some tips on weighing yourself.
1. Only do it once a week. The same day & time. (I use Sunday mornings at 7ish AM)
2. Make sure you always use the toilet before weighing yourself. (You'd be surprised how many extra lbs a bladder and colon can hold)
3. Always use the same scale. Don't use a cheap scale from Walmart. I've found that there are great Dr's scales that can be found at flea markets for $25 (& probably on EBay too)
4. Gaining a pound or 2 is not the end of the world. Being on a weight loss plan means you lose weight over time. Also, if you are exercising, you are probably building muscle and muscle outweighs fat (this is a good thing because more muscle means you have the ability to burn fat at a faster rate)
5. Give it Time. Everyone is different. People with slower metabolisms will lose weight more slowly.

Hi guys, I have been lurking in this thread but thought I'd join you. I am not overweight per se, at 5'5" and 137.5 lbs, but that just makes it soooooo hard to lose even a bit of weight.

I am trying to get to 130, or better yet 128. That is what I weighed last year, and I have an important belly dancing gig coming up in November. I don't see why I can't weigh that again. "oh boo hooo" some of you may be saying, but believe me, this weight is not coming off no matter what I do, and it's as insurmountable as if I had to lose 50lbs.

My weight mysteriously piled on this year, mostly since February when I started on the indoor trainer and watching my weight for cycling! I LOVE to eat more than anything, and I know that is a contributing factor, but I have always been able to lose any gains with relative ease. I am wondering if my metabolism has suddenly slowed? Who knows.

Sometimes I wish I were drastically overweight so I could lose a large and satisfying amount of weight, but now I would be ecstatic with 8lbs. *sigh* I have been to a nutritionist and have gone from 141 to my current weight in the past three weeks (most of it in the first week and half a pound this week), but it is sloooooooooooow. I am having a very hard time maintaining her caloric recommendations and I was hoping with the cycling at least 3 times a week plus ballet class that I would lose a bit faster. But slow and steady will win the race...I HOPE!
