I think I can officially be a member of the weightloss club. Several months ago I started at almost 210#, and went on a diet. I just cut out all the junk/snack foods, started eating healthier stuff, like fruits & veggies more often, instead of chips and chocolate. (Don't get me wrong, I still love my chips and chocolate, just in moderation).
Then reconditioned the ol' Centurion Ironman, and started riding again. Also go for walks everynight with the Sherman Gepherds.
I have now reached my target weight for my thin boned frame. I now weigh a whopping......
170#!!!!!!!!!!!! YEEEEHAWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I have been thus far able to maintain my weight from 170-175# for the last month or so now. I just have to get used to eating the right amount and watching the junk food. My thin bones just weren't meant to haul around the extra 40# of fat. I can still bench press the same weight, and feel more lively than I have felt since I was in the military 7 years ago, when I weighed the same.
Now I get to build my new bike for next year. :)
How much riding do you guys do to regulate your wieght? 30 mile a week? 50 miles a week?
PWRDbyTRD
Yep, I prefer the Cliff bar over the Power bar. Better texture is what does it for me.

Congrats! Good job! The last 30 or so pounds are the HARDEST to loose!

I, weather permitting, normally ride any where from 60 to over 100 miles per week. You also have to look at the calorie intake of the person to get a picture of the CALin vs. CALout. You have to know both sides of the equation. I am on a 2000 cal./day lifestyle. If you believe the calorie calculators, I burn an extra 600 calories/day by bike commuting to work 13.2 miles. Hope this helps.
I am now tracking my food intake at http://www.fitday.com . It has really helped me to see how many calories I eat each day. Also how many calories I burn vs. my daily caloric intake.

I'm still losing weight, 230 back in March 04, and 183 this morning. So to do that I just eat healthy like everyone else says, lift weights 2-3 days a week and ride between 100 and 160 miles a week, with the occasional slow week if weather stinks. To maintain, I imagine I could either ride less or eat more, but I really love riding that many miles. I think I'd get board without them, I also sold my TV back when I got serious about getting healthy, so that gives me more time to ride ;)
I highly reccomend going TV-less, it's VERY liberating!

I'm down from 100kg (220lb) in May to 80kg (175lb) in Nov. That's just under a kilo per week. Another 10kg to go to reach first target weight of 70kg by Feb, then maybe onwards to 65kg for racing but I'll let the doc decide on that score.
Weight is peeling of naturally with minor adjustments to diet (eg. replace coke with fruit juice, reduce alcohol), more frequent eating instead of 3 large meals, and good training. I'm eating loads more now but metabolic rate is much higher, so it's all getting burned up. Whoop.
I also lost over 10kg by buying a new bike :) Al is so much lighter than steel.
I haven't had a tv in almost 10 years. TV is boring.

I haven't had a tv in almost 10 years. TV is boring.
That may be true, but I find your holier-than-thou attitude condescending. There are plenty of uses for a television aside from asinine television programming. A TV is simply a video display that can be used for video games, watching movies, and more.
Okay then, TV programming is boring. I find that out of 70+ channels there are only 3 or 4 programms per week that I would like to watch. I just think that is a waste. Out of the hundrends of progamms per weeks only a handful interest me.
So, I guess by your definition my computer is a tv. I watch movies on it, play games.

ok, Ive been watching this thread for a while now. I am officially able to enter in here and heres why. I am not as proud as I want to be because I will tell you all that I have lost weight with cycling but I have a problem now.
Anyhow, Im 31 years old, 5 foot 9.5 inches. Ex smoker since july 04'. I weighed in at 220 pounds on july 30th of this year after a beach Vacation. Immediately after the vacation I started eating better and riding my wifes elliptical. I started loosing weight 5 pounds, then 7 then 10 pounds. I went to my LBS and purchased an 05' Trek 1000. I have owned 3 other new MB's and this was my first road bike. Almost 500 miles later, I weigh in a just a tick over 200 pounds. My cholesteral has dropped 16 points to 172 my HDL is better as well as my LDL and triglicerides. My resting heart rate has dropped from 68 to 55 with a low of 50 but is currently back up to 60. I feel and look better.
BUT!
I am so freaking stuck on 200 pounds that I am getting really frustrated at this. It seems the more I ride, the more stuck I get. I am taking in 1500-2000 calories a day and on my ride days which can be 15 miles to 30 miles, I take in around 2500.
Now, I know everyone is different, but why have I become stuck? Has my body gotten use to the cycling? Am I not taking in enough calories? My goal is a lean mean 165 pounds by August 5 2005. I thnk it can be done but I know its gonna be hard.
I live in the mountains if NC and tonight is the first night I can truly say that summer is GONE. Its COLD outside. Anyhow, I purchased and trainer and I am commited to working out all winter long. I will not stop riding because I know it helps me and I look and feel better.
Please, if anyone has any idea how I can become "unstuck" and get under 200 pounds and continue the weight loss, please feel free to post here or email me. I have 35 pounds to loose and After the first 20 pounds just melted off, I figure "hey 35 more will be easy" well, its not and I am battling hard to keep from gaining.
Thanks in advance !
Chris
Hey Man. Congrats on getting where you're at right now. I figured I'd attempt to help you a little on getting to where you wanna be. I'm 5' 10" and 170 pounds of muscle, 19 years of age and have never smoked a day in my life... however I can offer you a good piece of advice.
For every 5 pounds of muslce you have, you burn 500 calories A DAY to KEEP that muscle. Therefore, if you gain 5 pounds of muscle.. you'll burn off the extra fat. I have such a hard time keeping my muscle it's not even funny because my metabolism is so damned high.
Also, remember to eat 6-8 small meals throughout the day. None of this "Good ol' American 3 big meals a day" BS. Eating smaller meals boosts your metabolism, and will help keep your furnace going. DO NOT starve your body, as that will only make you GAIN weight... as you're body is trying to conserve.
So the best things you can do are:
1. Weight lift. Even 2 days a week, just LIFT. Gain some muscle mass. It'll burn fat FOR you.
2. Eat small, frequent, healthy meals throughout the day. Don't try a specific "diet" .. just eat CLEAN. As in no fast food, no cookies, candy, ice-cream, etc. Drink lots of milk, juice, and water. Consume 1 gram of protein to 1 pound of your body weight DAILY. (I consume 170-175g's of protein a day, since I weigh 170).
3. Don't give up. You'll get it.
I hope that helps. It MOST certainly has worked for me over the years... I weigh the same now as I did freshmen year of HS.... and I'm now taller, leaner, and a LOT more toned.
Anyway, ride hard.. and keep the rubber side down.

No, a computer is not a tv. I do have a tv, but also find most programming rather vapid. I was simply responding to your implied insult to tv owners. No offense intended, but it just reminded me of some people I know, whose attitude is best illustrated by an old Onion (http://www.theonion.com) article you may have seen, Area Man Constantly Mentioning He Doesn't Own A Television (http://davefaq.com/Opinions/Television/Onion.html).
Basically, you seemed to make it sound like anyone who owned a tv must be some sort of dunce.
Edit: This is way off topic, and I am done with this subject in this thread.
Many threads go off topic. How many conversations stay on one topic? I was not implying that because someone owned a tv they were stupid. I was taking about me. I never mentioned anything about anyone else. Don't read between the lines. If I wanted to call someone stupid I would just do it. I'm not a steel magnolia. I didn't bring up the tv topic anyway.

How wonderful to see so many people have been successful with weight loss. I myself have lost 31lb and counting since the end of July 04... Part of my new habits include commuting to work by bicycle. A great way to lose those extra lbs and save some cash as well.
It's all about supporting each other. I think when people come together for a common purpose, it's good for all involved.

The Nazi's weren't bad on purpose, they just used their weight loss powers for evil because they were a bit confused (brainwashed actually).
I knew someone would say somthing to that effect about Nazi's. How about the 9/11?

I mean it's off topic (in fact it's an off topic).
See you in my next post when I make racing weight in February.
What is your race weight?
Skeletor (rockmuncher) does have a good point, we were off topic. For my part, I appoligize. On topic, I would like to say that even though I did not ride my bike today, I walked 4.55 miles with my son. I only had to put him on my shoulders for the last 1/4 mile. Not too shabby for a three year old. I can just smell the fat burning off! (Smells like bacon) :D

Optimum is 67kg (147lbs), but I won't be that low in February unless I get half my stomach removed! The target weight for the start of the winter season is around 72kg (158lbs), which works out at just under a kilo per week. That's the same rate as for the last 25 weeks, so it shouldn't be a problem.
I'll be training through Christmas and start on intervals mid-January, so there won't be any time for Chritmas cheer to settle! :D

I've read the past few pages of posts with interest.
N7CZinMT: Congrats on going off your diabetes meds. That's awesome!
PWRDbyTRD: Dude, you are an inspiration. Seriously. Keep up the great work!
Really both of you specifically have been inspirations to me. I want to lose weight and keep from being diabetic later in life. I'm 28 years old, weigh 330, and bike commute every chance I get. Usually 4 days a week, sometimes 5. I want to be in better physical health in general (which I am, having been riding since April/May), but better than I am now. I want to lose 100lbs by the time I am 30 (I *just* turned 28). I want to be down to 200-210lbs in the end, but right now I'd be happy to hit 300.
My wife is about 80lbs overweight and she just joined Curves and is working out there 3 days a week. She's been working out for 2 weeks and we just started a low-carb (not Atkins, just lower carb) diet last week. She has already lost 4.25 pounds and 1% body fat, and is doing really good. She is who is helping me with my diet, which eating 6 times a day and eating *healthy* with very little processed food. I FEEL so much better after only 1 week, its amazing.
Anyway I just wanted to say: Keep posting progress, keep working out, and don't anybody get discouraged. We can all do it!
RyKo, I know you are not new around here, but welcome. When we are supportive of each other, we are all more likely to succeed. Stick with it, before you know it, we'll all be carrying rocks in our pockets (to keep from blowing away). :D

Weighed in at 235 in mid-late June. I'm at 175 as of today (december 1st). Looking to get down to 160 so I still have a ways to go.
Hehe, check this out. This one picture is from 2001 when I was on steroids for a medical condition.

As you may have guessed I've aged a little (I'll turn 19 in January) and I use the top picture for motivation :D
Man, things are WAY quiet in this thread lately! Perhaps we don't want to admit to our seasonal weight gains? I have been fighting to maintain 215 and have lost big time! Maxed out at 232 and now back down to 225. I look at this as another bump in the road to my goal weight. I've been sick since Thanksgiving and unable to ride. Not an excuse, just a fact.
ROLL CALL EVERYONE!
What is your current weight? (+/- goal) Mine is 225 +45lbs from goal.
What are you doing to keep motivated? Trying to get everyone else here going!
Come on ya'll! We gotta help each other out! I know I need the motivation!

I lost a few pounds.
I'm at 170 with a goal of 160. Sooo close. I've upped my workout. I now ride for an hour and 15 minutes every night on varying inclines (exercise bike). I am also now officially addicted to Clif bars :)
Ritz Here! 253 and fallin' babeeee! I started this at 265. I was 308 at my heaviest. The weather has been my undoing as far as riding goes. I ride when I can and walk when I can't. Check up on me anytime guys, accountability is cool.(Edit) Oh yeah, my goal weight is 180 by August 5th 2005.

I'll throw my litle story in here. About 2 years ago I stepped on the scales and saw the wheel turn to that lovely little number 311. Well, being about 6'3, and just a big guy in general I really didn't think I was that heavy. Any time somebody would guess my weight they would usually say 260, or 270. Anyway, I never really knew how big I was until that day.
I decided I needed to slim down a bunch, and told myself if I could get down to 230 I'd be happy. No set dates, no benchmarks, just lose the weight. First thing I did was go out and buy myself a bike, which by the way has become an extension of myself.
I'm not going to get into all the details of what I did to lose weight, the whole idea was just a change in all the fundamental ways I live my life. Food, activity levels, frame of mind. I gradually just tried to swap the bad habits with some good habits. Well, maybe not good, but better habits.
Getting to the point, I decided that I was only going to step on the scales 1 time each year. I figured that way I wouldn't drive myself crazy with numbers that may not always be to my liking. One year later I weighed in at 240. I gotta tell you, I hadn't been so happy in a long time. Increased energy levels and traded the 42 and 44 inch pants for some 38's and 40's. The biggest change was in my confidence and just general mental strength and agility.
The changes I made have stuck with me since then, something that continually benefits me. After that first year I figured I should set a goal, 220 sounded good. My reasoning being I was so big that the first 70lbs would be eaier to lose than the last 20lbs.
1.5 years into this I decide to check out the scales again, because my clothes were getting way to big. Stepped on, closed my eyes and gave myself a moment. Looked down, 211. I not only achieved my goal 6 months faster than planned, but I surpassed it by 10lbs. Traded in the 38 and 40 inch pants for nothing but 36's. That felt good. Well, skipping to today. I stepped on the scales again 4 or 5 days ago...204. I've lost 106lbs in 2 years. I just bought a new pair of jeans, 34 inch waist. It's a bit of a squeeze right now, but I figure by March they'll fit just about right. Not since I was 14 have I worn that size.
I just realized how long winded this was, and poorly written at that, but I'm not editing it. When I think of how lazy and angry at the world I was when I weighed 300+, I'm astonished. Not so much astonished that I lost the weight, I think I can do pretty damn near anything now, but astonished how easy it was over the long term. It started with one simple change. Once I got that down, I made another, and so on.
I feel better than I have my entire life. I feel stronger and smarter than before. And I have more confidence than I thought I would ever posess. All it took was small steps and small lifestyle changes.
I guess this is my challenge to every person out there that is overweight and out of shape. I challenge you to lose that weight, but don't look for the quick fix. Take your time, go at your own pace, and just start with simple changes. I think you'll find that you won't stress yourself out, but you will achieve your goals. Just don't STRESS about it!
i can't wait to get back on the bike and lose some pounds! Congrats to all those who hit or achieve their milestone.

Be careful with the Clif bars, they contain caffiene. Too much caffiene can cause problems getting to sleep, which can in turn lead to eating problems. Caffiene is also stored in the muscle tissue and displaces glycogen (energy).
NOTE: If you have a large caffiene intake and you need to reduce it do so slowly. Cutting out caffiene too fast can also cause pretty bad withdrawal symptoms.

oooo, excellent point. I know exactly what you mean by eating late. Which is why I have sworn off any food after dinner :D I learned my lessons. I couldn't drop any weight. why? Because I would snack before going to bed. Horrible thing to do when trying to lose weight. Thank you though for your comments. Everyone here trying to lose weight needs to know eating late at night is detrimental to losing weight. Otherwise though, the clif bars are alright, right?
