oh ok. As long as you don't go veggie (which only have around 230 calories). You need some calories in that sub if you wanna a 6 incher to satisfy that appetite (or so I've found). Good job, best of luck to you!

For the first time I've hit a weight loss plateau even though exercising a lot. In this past as long as I exercised and watched what I ate, weight would come off steadily about 2 lbs a week.
In the last two weeks between keeping my intake down to about 2100 cal/day (balanced nutrition, minimize junk food), and exercising a lot, based on metabolic rate calculators I should have had a deficit of more than 1500 cal/day, which should lead to weight loss of 3 pounds per week. Instead, in 2 weeks I loss less than a pound :( I realize this caloric deficit is excessive, you're supposed to shoot for no more than 2 pounds a week of weight loss. I also know that if you restrict food intake too extremely, your body can lower its metabolism and minimize weight loss (the "set point theory"). But I didn't think this was possible from exercising too much. How can your body lower your metabolism when your exercising a lot? Anyway, my guess is I should cut back on my exercise.
Sorry for the long story. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

BentandFolded,
I've had friends who have gone through that, and they upped their food intake for just a few days (then brought it back down), and that seemed to do the trick.
Good luck!!
BentandFolded - I think we all go through that at one point or another. I have gone through it twice since I started trying to lose weight in December. Recently I was stuck at 187 pounds for over two weeks. I was starting to get pretty discouraged because of it.
A couple of weeks ago I went on a mini get away for a couple of days. While I was gone I had ribs and buffalo wings one night, the next day I had a greasy hamburger then hit the ice cream shop. For dinner that night I had every fried food imaginable. I couldn't believe I had eaten all of that. Next day I was back in the gym. The following day I weighed myself, I was 185!!!! I couldn't believe it and I can't explain it but somehow it shocked my body enough to get me back on track. That was two weeks ago, I'm now at 181.
Update time:
3/7 start: 220lbs
3/28: 206lbs
4/11 Intermediary goal: 200lbs
Long term goal: 180lbs
Still following the SB diet, and moderate excercise. Been walking about 1-2mi/day, sadly haven't had a chance to get on the bike in two freakin' weeks. Hope to remedy that this weekend. Also up to drinking 7-8 literes of water/day.
Well one week down and four pounds gone!
Start - 03/22/05 = 226
today - 03/29/05 = 222
shooting for 220 by next week...since I have to travel over the weekend and will be eating out for at least 9 meals...it might be tough...

That is awesome Darren, congratulations. If possible eat subway for at least one meal a day while you are out of town. On top of that have water with your meals instead of cokes. That should help out some. Personally I generally cheat at least once or twice on the weekends myself, you have to reward yourself from time to time.

Thanks Cheebahmunkey and Lowcel for the feedback! :) Also thanks for the suggestion about Subway and the link to that website. I'll definitely seek out a Subway if I can...great suggestion...love their subs...
One night last week I got too busy to cook (or so I thought) and went to Taco-Bell. After looking at that online menu...I think it'll be the last time for a while! Oh MY GOD! That dinner was 1500 freakin' calories and had 77 grams of fat! I knew it was bad, but that just really put it into perspective!

Time for an update:
January 18, 2005 --> 213 lbs.
February 21, 2005 --> 203 lbs.
March 30, 2005 --> 190 lbs.
Target --> 170 lbs. by September 2, 2005.
With riding season just a few warm days away and just over five months left to go, I feel confident I'll reach my goal. The trick at that point will be keeping the weight off. I can't wait to see what climbing hills feels like without an extra 23 lbs. weighing me down!

How can one take that much weight off?? I'm now at 190, and I've been training. It seems that the more I train, the more weight I gain. I want to be much more lean.

I'm still here, but it has been pretty slow lately. I went to florida for spring break last week, so the "diet" went out the window for that week. I am trying to make small lifetime changes instead of major restrictions. That way I can keep going all of my life and never put the lbs back on. I haven't had a chance to weight myself in a few weeks, but I have had the bike out more lately and I love riding!

You might just be building more muscle, which weighs more than fat. I've lost the weight by using FitDay to track my calorie intake. I make sure that I eat less than I burn. Simple as that. The weight loss has been gradual and steady. It will begin to taper off soon, I'm sure, but I'll soon be riding a lot, so that will offset it.

I think that diet is probably the most important step to losing weight with cardio exercise a very close second. For me no matter how much I ride I have not lost any weight in the past. Once I started watching what I ate the weight started coming off.
As of right now I am down 39 pounds from 12/1/04.

All these Success stories are great . I want see some before after pictures here are mine
I was 270 when I started to turn my life around. I now hover between 147-155. I began with a doctor assisted very low calorie diet that mainly consisted of shakes and prepared meals. I was eating about 1000 calories a day and doing lots of PA. My doctor was monitoring all this and I had blood tests ever week or so to make sure all everything was good. I did this for about 6-7 months until I lost around 70 pounds.
My dad is a cyclist so you can guess what happened to me (I am obsessed now!). I lost the rest of my weight by Biking, Gym and eating healthy and keeping track of my calories trying to stay around 1600-1800 net calories a day. It is a struggle sometimes but it is worth it and cycling has became a big big part of my life. And remember it is not a diet but a way of life and it is all about calories in vs. calories out for me at least.

Wow Matt! That is so awesome! I really hope that I can pull something like that off. I started at 304 and I would love to get down to 160 some day.
I will work on getting some pictures of my progress so far. I think I have one of my max, here is one from new years.
The second picture is from St. Patty's day. But I guess I look pretty similar. I have lost about 28 pounds.
On another note, I went for a 30 mile ride today. This is twice as far as I have ever ridden before.

I started at 370 pounds on January 1, 2004. I'm now at 260 with about 70-80 to go.
Here's my before and after. The after is from an article in my local paper about keeping new years resolutions.

Good job to everybody!!!!!!! It is awesome seeing before and after Pics . I know when I just started out this process I would surf the web looking for peoples weight loss pics . they gave me an extra push like if they can do it so can I.
As for looking at your own before and after shots it is weird . For me it did not really hit me until one day as I was passing a mirror in a store and I just caught a glimpse of myself and did not recognize the person I saw. It is weird I have had this image of myself being heavy for so long it all just hit me at once. It was very surreal. I still think of myself as the old Matt sometimes it is hard when you have been looking at the same image in the mirror and pictures for so long.
Keep up the great work everybody. It’s hard I know first hand but with a little stubbornness and persistence it all pays off

I rolled over 1100 miles for the year yesterday. Still no weight loss. I've tried less calories, more calories, Low Carb, balanced diet, and have returned to my diabetic diet. Still rock solid, if not inching up a skoash. Very discouraging.
Short of fasting and only eating when I'm going to be on the bike, I'm at a loss. Guess I'll just ride my bike and let the weight do what its going to do. Its driving me nuts.
C'Mon Z! Don't get all gloom and doom. Look at how much healthier you are today than you used to be! :) Even if you never lose another pound... don't you feel better? Sorry, I am the eternal optimist. WWW.TOURDEPANTS.COM 262 pounds and fallin'!

N7CZinMT,
Are you sure you still need to lose weight? I remember the before/after photos you posted a while back (the "2000 mile effect") and you looked quite trim in the after photo!!

P.S. CONGRATS on hitting 1100 miles already. That's impressive!

Hey Ritz, I don't mean to be, "all gloom and doom." I do have emotional peaks and valleys. I think the ride I did this weekend with BowWow from bikejournal has me doubting my perceived progress. He walked away from me on even the smallest of hills. Not to mention getting to see myself in riding position in his photos.

Howdy G.S. Yep. I'm sure I still need to loose weight. My doctor tells me so. The photo evidence also makes it very clear. I'm not trying to become the next Mike Magnuson, but I do want to look good as well as feel good on the bike.
I'm not giving up. Just venting some frustration to hopefully free it from my mind so I may better re-focus my efforts. I'm still enjoying being out on my bike. That won't change.
How can you not love riding through such incredible scenery? :)

Just out of curiosity have you checked your body fat percentage? It's possible that even though your weight isn't going down your body fat is. Just a thought.

Hey Z, I hope I didn't come off sounding like I was slaming you. I guess my encouragement skills need more polishing. At 262 rather fluffy pounds, I can only hope to be in your shape one day! :) Keep up the good work, whether you know it or not you are a real inspiration! Ritz.
Hey Ritz, no problem. I didn't take it in a bad way. Besides, perhaps I need a kick in the back-side..LOL
This Saturday and Sunday I'll be doing my first MS 150. It's 185 miles over two days from Houston to Austin. Day one is about 100 miles and will be my first true century. I've done metric centuries twice but as everyone knows, 62 miles is not 100 miles. The next day is 85 miles and mostly hills... I covet your prayers. If you're not the prayin' sort, just keep me in your thoughts. This may be just what I need to shake up my metabolism, and get off the 262 pound mark. :) WWW.TOURDEPANTS.COM

Last May I weighed 275 lbs. I rode all summer about 200 miles a week and did two centuries and an MS-150. I now weigh 217, broke that stubborn 220 barrier. I am 5' 11" and wnat to bet at 190 0r 185. I know I am riding faster these days, but cannot get the wieght to go. After an intense winter of weight training my body composition has changed, but how do you kick off those pounds in the stomach mostly. Oh yeah changed my diet a great deal sinc elast May. I want to race and come in reasonable well.

Hi! Do you have room for one more?
I'm in the process of shopping for a road bike after riding mtb on and off for years. I did some road biking last summer on my mtb with slicks just to see if I like road biking and I did. Along with my workouts at the YMCA I plan on making road biking a big part of my exercise plan. Plus it's fun!
I want to lose about 75 lbs and when I'm out on my bike I feel like I am just about the only overweight person out there (especially of the female variety). I hope it's not true but it sure feels like it.
Best of luck to all and I look forward to getting to know you!

Welcome Gypsy!
My wife recently started riding. So, you are not the only female out there trying to loose weight and get healthy. Ride as much as possible and eat right. You'll do fine. Of course, the most important part is to HAVE FUN!
Bolo-Yo! I can relate! I've been stuck at around 220lbs even though trying to loose weight for the Tax Day Challenge! Very frustrating! I don't know how you can get rid of the the tummy. If you fin the solution let me know. That is where I'm carrying 90% of the weight I have left to loose. Now if I can get the weather to cooperate, I'll be able to concentrate on training for the TT in May! :)

Gypsy, we're out there. Promise!
I don't think I've posted in this thread in a good long while - after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the winter, my doc put me on a liquid diet through a local research hospital (all Harvard med school faculty, who are competent despite that handicap ;) ). So far I'm down 20% of my starting weight, and a total of 80 pounds from my highest weight ever. Still have a ways to go, but my glucose has normalized, I'm back on some solid food and - MORE IMPORTANTLY - I bought myself a shiny new road bike to celebrate this week's expected success of no longer being Officially Obese, but merely Overweight.
The funniest thing is how much I like the lower headset on my new bike, though I'd demanded upright position in the past. I guess a lot more changes as one gets smaller than just the pants size! Who knows - maybe I'll end up with drop bars on the next bike.
Anyway, I just wanted to drop by and represent for the fat chicks on bikes :)

Ritz - what a great website!
Zin - Thanks for the advice. I'm looking forward to frequent and fun rides! Wish your wife the best for me!
BostonKate - Congratulations on your weight loss! That is just awesome! And also congrats on graduating from "officially obese" to "overweight". What a great accomplishment! I look forward to celebrating the same! All the best from a newbie fat chick on a bike! :D
