Training & Nutrition - Weight Loss Club

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Slantz, the guy that owns the site, really is very personable. If you ever have a navigation problem there again, just post a question to him, if he doesn't answer right away, I would be very surprised! Peace, Ritz.

Finally seem to have passed my plateau. I've been holding steady at 320 for about 5 weeks or so I think. I finally saw it jump down to 315 today. :)
Keep it up K.T. You're doing great!

This is not the time of year to loose touch. I know I'll need to lean on everyone to help me through the holiday season.

well i'm making goals for the amount of calories i want to eat in a day. i'm setting my goal at 2000, and so far i'm going way over, but this should help me error on the right side of 3500.
266 pounds and holding. Hopefully we'll see a change in that soon. Peace, Ritz.

I'm guilty of not checking in as often as I should either. I can definitely see a change since the weather has gotten crummy and I started traveling again: Instead of slowly losing, I've gone back up a couple of pounds. Lack of exercise and too many room service meals are killing me. And this "get dark early" stuff is just awful (and gonna get worse on Sunday).
It's time to order myself a new trainer, get on it and use it regularly. That'll help me get through the holidays and winter, and leave me in much better shape for next season. I also really need to go back to logging my food. For me, that's important especially during the holidays so that I know when to say, "enough!"

You all seem to have trouble this time of year....if anything I think I do better in winter. Of course, part of that is because I live in FL and it doesn't get too cold to go out and do things in. If anything....with the cold brisk air, it "perks me up" and I get MORE active thsi time of year.
I just need to watch the holiday food binging. My family (like most) doesn't have the healthiest food choices in the holiday fat & calorie buffet train.
BTW....I think I stole (gave back) another few pounds. Scalre looked like about 313 this morning. :D
Oh....another fun story. I went in to doctor a few days ago (1st time in about 3 months) for a quarterly blood sugar check (A1C). The med. tech put me on the scale before taking me back to room, and is looking at my previous weight to get a good starting point. She starts going down.....going down....and she mumbles to herself "that can't be right". I say, "oh yes it is".......she gets all glitter eyes and starts asking me how I lost it and interested because she'd like to lose it too, etc.... That was a nice (unintended) compliment. :D
Congrats KT! That was a cool perk of a Dr.'s visit. :D
Down to 222 this morning. Was 221 yesterday, but had a little to much sodium so think I retained a bit of water.
Congrats KT! Keep at'r!
Good goin' Zin, I'm working on getting to 250 by Christmas. At 266 now, it's totally do-able. Peace, Ritz.

My goal is to break into the 200's by New Year's (esp. since my dad's getting married on New Year's day).
I pullin' for you KT! I set mine so low because I really hate to fail! :D LOL! Actually, that was just the number the other fella' (Joe 33 on Bike Journal) came up with. We are having a little competition because we both weighed 266 lbs at the same time. Peace, Ritz.

Competition is a great motivation!! :)
I have a friend (lady) who is about same weight as me (actually, more now). I was hoping to get something like this going with her...but it seems she has all but given up. She's one of those who thinks they know it all, so can't be bothered with what you "think".
So even though I've lost 40 lbs (give or take) and she has been damn near constant as long as I've known her (about 2 or 3 years), she's too stubborn to admit she's wrong and try something different. Now she just avoids me like the plague.....used to hang out 3 to 4 times a week, now it's more like once a month.
Just like any other addiction...you have to admit you have a problem before you can begin to change. Sounds like she's still in denial. Here's hoping that she'll start to listen to a dear friend (You) before it's too late. Peace, Ritz.

KT - I have a similar situation with a friend. At one point we were within a pound of each other. Now, I've lost 30 and she has gained 30, so we have 60 pounds between us. We had great conversations about learning to take care and eat right until I saw her (we live in different states) after I had lost weight. She didn't recognize me at the airport. Within the next year, she avoided my calls and changed the subject whenever we talked about health stuff and then she started sending me odd gifts . . . like high fat cookbooks (and I don't cook and I've never eaten high fat).
Last night she called and told me about her 'great news from the cardiologist.' She is down 2 pounds from 6 years ago, is on all kinds of medication for cholesterol, blood pressure (and is in her 30's) - that was her great news. As we talked she then let me know that on her way home from the cardiologist, she found a store that carries ding-dongs . . . apparently she has been on a search for them during the past 6 months.
She bought a box on ding-dongs on the way home from a cardiologist!
I responded with humor and said, 'I'd like to be supportive, but I'm feeling like I should be doing some sort of intervention at this point.' She laughed and laughed. I approached it with humor, but was feeling really serious and somewhat disturbed when I got off the phone. Weight loss is such a precarious journey. I had this very strong realization last night that I can't afford to talk to her.

I have recently (about a month) started really using that mag trainer that I had bought 15 odd years ago (still virtually new!). Motivation and a few spinverals DVDs have really helped me along. Which then makes it easier for me to have a bit more leeway with my food...
Wow Sandy, that stinks! I hope your friend comes around too!

I haven't checked in here since reaching my goal of 165 pounds (from 205). i've been succesfully maintaining the weight, but I think I'd like to drop maybe 5 more. So here I am again!
I guess mostly I'll be happy if I manage to maintain my weight through the holidays and then work on the five pounds, but we'll see. I've been reading a lot of material on maintaining weight loss, and one good point I keep reading is that too often people who lose weight don't think it's "for real." They just don't think their new body is theirs, and in the back of their mind they expect to put some of their weight back on. So I'm trying to fight that.

Good job and keep it up Derek!!
Sandy....I surely feel your pain. I'm beginning to wonder if I need to do something similar with this friend. It is easier that she has been avoiding me (I don't think its coincidence). Part of her problem is that she also quit the cycling for the most part (we used to ride together). As always the problem is that nobody will make the change to eat right and exercise until THEY want to make the change....it's got to hit you like a box of rocks upside the head - it can't be a simple "I want to lose some weight".
I've "wanted to lose weight" before and a few times been mildly successful, but never in the long term. My key has been "Eat To Live" in terms of diet (for the most part) and a lot of cycling. It hit me a few months ago like a box of rocks.....I just woke up one day and said "everyday you hear of people that lose 100 pounds and do it right and keep it off......I AM GOING TO BE THE NEXT ONE!".
My friend, unfortunately, is old enough that she MUST do something about it now....she's over 50 and probably in the 350 pound range (at about 5'5" or so I'd guess). I've told her about "Eat To Live" and she thinks she has the right combination "for her" (she insists that different things work for different people....I can't convince her that some things are just general and work for everybody). If her plan is working "for her" then why hasn't she dropped any weight (at least noticeably) in the 2 years or so I've known her.
She also did something similar with your friend and the ding-dongs. She had been talking about all this healthy eating, blah blah and when on vacation told me about the wooooonderful desserts that they served in her hotel's restaurant and how she and her friend sampled every one of them at least twice.
Anyway....enough ranting. If/When your friend is ready to really work at it, I'd suggest you recommend the book "Eat To Live" to her and get her into cycling if she isn't already and also let her know that she needs to cycle/exercise 3-4 times a week, not just once on Sunday for 1 1/2 hours (like I was doing for the first year).
Wow! Activity sure does come in spurts on this thread. ;)

I've got some from a vegetarian cookbook I bought a month or two ago. I'll try to remember to put a few up that I really liked when I get home from work.
This is the book I have:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/051788268X/qid=1131463247/sr=8-12/ref=pd_bbs_12/102-9970341-5487335?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
One simple recipe I remember was to saute corn and red onion until "just" starting to carmelize, then drop in a few teaspoons of balsamic vinegar and sautee just another minute to disolve the vinegar. It's simple and quite yummy.

Hello everyone! I'm a longtime lurker, but decided to post today. The good news is that I'm down 13 pounds! I hit 168 in August, this was a bit too much for a 5'11" woman. I joined Weight Watchers and am down to 155. My goal is 150 - my weight when I graduated college, seems like a good goal. I can already feel the difference in my knees and my back when I'm working out, and now I can keep up with my husband when we go jogging!
BUT instead of being happy for me, people are starting to say "Don't lose too much weight!" and "Are you sure 155 isn't too light?" Ummm...no, it's not too light by any height/weight chart, and I'm wearing a size 10 pants -- I'm not a waif by any stretch of the imagination (nor do I want to be one). Has anyone else gotten this negative response from their success?

No I haven't gotten the "aren't you too light?" comments, but then again, I'm still far enough above normal that I'd be pretty shocked if I did hear that. I'm weighin in at about 315 now (down from 360-370).

I purchased the Road Bike roughly three months ago with a goal of losing 40lbs. I have lost 22lbs so far and I feel pretty confident about surpassing my original goal. I weighed in at 260 and was originally shooting for 220. At 6'3" I believe that 200lbs is about optimum weight for me. I had been trying just dieting for a couple of years with little to no exercise and I only gained weight. Bicycling has become quite the exercise of choice. In fact I am afraid that I have become hopelesly addicted and have been making the LBS pretty happy here of late.
Update: I have continued to ride more and eat less.
Since daylight savings time ended I am no longer able to ride after work so I take it to work and ride at lunch.
This A.M. I weighed in at 229. Nine pounds from my original goal. I am revising the goal to be at 200 Lbs by January 1.
Congrats to all in this thread. Reading through it occasionally really does provide some excellent inspiration.
"And the people rejoiced!" Congrats Sharpknife! Keep up the good work and keep us posted! :D Peace, Ritz.

Next on the list, Thanksgiving.
What are your plans to make it through Thanksgiving maintaining your weight loss?
Awesome work Zin - turkey day is just around the corner. the husband and I will be sharing the day together - avoiding big family dinners. We are planning a long bike ride/picnic if the weather holds and taking along the dogs for a healthy day of riding and a bit of feasting for all.
Thanks for the link to fitday.com. I had been keeping all that stuff written in a little journal - we've successfully kept 98% of our days between 1500-1800 calories. The hubby and I started riding in August on 3 speed cruisers and weighing in at 307(me) and 315(him). We are getting 21sp comfort bikes for christmas presents to ourselves, as the 3 speeds are limiting how far we can go in our beautiful little town of Moab, Utah.
So far we are down about 25#s each. Our "diet" is just eating sensibly and counting calories. I don't beat myself up over little indulgences, I just keep my self accountable for every thing I put in my body, then go for a bike ride. This is a life style change for us and we are in it together. We both were starting to see our health deteriorate as we headed into our 40's. This is really the last great chance to achieve a healthy lifestyle. We are excited to be on the right path and committed to seeing this through together. And really, if we can't get fit living in Moab, Utah, then we are truly lost causes. But- we are totally positive. All success and good stuff so far.
Happy Holidays!
fatmoabgal
Hey gal! Congrats on the lifestyle change! If you stick with the bike, it will save your life. I've managed to reverse type II diabetes and have been off of the meds for 1 year this month! A fact that I am very proud of. ;)
You and "hubby" sound as if your on the right track. Hang in there. You won't believe the quality of life that awaits you on the other side.
I could not have imagined that I would be riding centurys. Climbing mountain passes. Competing in ITTs & Road Races. A few years go. Now? Bring'em on!
Cycling has introduced me to poeple who I now held dear as my closest friends.
Please accept an invitation to join us over on http://www.bikejournal.com to record your rides. Its as important to track them as it is to track your food.

I would like to join the club. I started riding when I was 264, up from my weight of 184 A few years ago. That's 80 lbs., a big chunk of my body weight. I'm now at 242, and starting to feel like there is hope of getting back in shape and maybe even get sub 200. A lot of my riding is still my 12mile long round trip to work, but I've been throwing in miles when I can. It's a lot easier to exercise on the bike because I enjoy riding. It also helps that I have almost an hour of riding built into my day every day that I work. Now my next goal is 225, wish me luck.
Welcome Scott!
80lbs in 2 year is a bit of an explosion of weight gain. If not to forward, I'm wondering if there was a specific event that may have triggered your wieght gain? Much of my gain has been from emotional eating. Boardom, depression, and joy. All led to eating over the years.
What ever the trigger, it sounds like you have things moving in the right direction. I too ride pretty much only 12 miles per day on my commute this time of year. Last year, I lost 30lbs by pretty much just doing my commute. Its a good thing....
There is hope. You can get there. Remember, its a marathon. Not a sprint.

Down to 288, from 330 in july. put on at least 5 pounds of muscle in the last 2 months, cause i gained weight between a monthly weigh in, my pants fit looser, but my quads got bigger, very noticeably so, ah gotta love those Squats.

Ritz,
That's absolutely right. It's inches that count, not weight. This is a tough time of year for most of us that fight weight problems so we all have to hang tough. And like Nancy said, "Just say no," to that cookie, piece of pie, extra helping of green been casserole, etc.

I actually gained the weight over a period of about 5 years. Lack of exercise and work related stress were the cause. Now that I'm riding I don't have to find time to work out every day, it's built into my day. As for the Stress, I'm burning that off on the bike as well. I'm also a 12 mile round trip from some ok dirt trails to ride around on for fun. BIG hill about halfway there gets my legs burning. Last weekend I took a trip out there and back. It runs alongside the highway and traffic on the highway was so slow I was going faster than the cars. I'm not fast, they were that slow. The good thing about that hill is coming down makes up for riding up. I was doing over 30 MPH coming down the hill waving at the highway traffic and smiling. I can see the muscles firming up, so I'm not watching the scale for now. I just have to make sure I don't up my calorie intake and negate the exercise.

Congrats on the new record ... but I'm jealous! The weather here has been so-so — riding is definitely possible without freezing, at least for now — but the short days are killing me. That's the thing about Muscle Gain - once you have muscles, you need to feed 'em, so eventually your weight will go down as your muscles eat up all that fat around your gut!
Anyway, there have been a few big changes in my life over the past month and I've been able to maintain my weight (though not drop the last 5 pounds yet). I was engaged a little over a month ago, and I just recently found a new job, which I will start on December 5th. The bummer about the new job is that it's only a 3-4mile round trip, as opposed to my current 24(!) mile round trip! I'm going to need to be disciplined about long after work rides to keep the weight off.
I joined a gym for the first time in 3 years, with the hope being that I can go in for a few spin classes and aq bit of weight lifting after work until it's sunny enough to be outside after work again. It was a riot to lift weights last week and actually SEE the muscles in my arms and legs - they had previously been under quite a bit of fat!
Ok, so how did everyone do on Thanksgiving?
I weighed in at 215lbs Thanksgiving morning. I picked up 4lbs of water weight from the holiday. Today, its back to my LC ways. I expect to drop the water weight over the next day or two.
I must admit that I ingested more calories than I expended, however; I did not binge! I rode 4.9 miles in a Thanksgiving Day Parade to boot! How did everyone else do? Peace, Ritz.
