Went to Doctor today to get the injured arch on my foot looked at. No problems there fortunately. I was thrilled to learn my BMI is down to 30! Now I am overweight instead of obese. Progress! My resting BP was down to 111/60, also a good improvement. My doctor was happy, and I am thrilled. Now if I could just break through the weight plateau I've been stuck on for a month. My wife has noticed me trading fat for muscle, but I want to lose the gut. Still trying...

Just my update; I decided Jan 1st, yeah I know who didnt, that my weight and eating habits were terrible and a change needed to be made. I have always been active, hoops, golf, some riding, but as we get older we cant continue on the same diet path. I am using fitday.com and really tracking my calories. I am eating low fat and sticking to it. I have been doing cardio three to four times a week. I have managed three rides this year and for winter in Chicago that aint too bad. Its freakin 3 degrees outside right now. I started the year at 236 lbs and last week I weighed in at 223 lbs. At 6'3'' I dont look overly fat but I did feel it. It is really amazing how simply changing your diet can drop pounds! Later.

I'm right with you. I'm 6'3" and 225 as of February 1st. Currently I'm down to 221 and waitng for the warmer weather to hit. I'm in New England but grew up in Dixon, IL. Same cold out here as out there. I know the pounds will shed once we are consistently over 40.

Stay in touch, Id like to see how you do.

Yeah the winters are tough i'm going to school in upstate ny and its cold as hell. It has been nice enough to ride lately but i don't have my bike with me :( got a brand new serotta fierte and i didn't have room in the car to bring it up with me. I shouldn't sweat the winter weight i know once its 40 regularly like you said i'll drop it real quick. Its still discouraging to step on the scale and see me at my fattest haha

It has been awhile sine I have been here. I need to lose about 50 lbs. I am riding but not long due to injury riding is all I have left for cardio.

I will post and keep up to date info on my quest. Last time i rode to lose weight i lost over a 110lbs. I use to race and starting back after 14 years away and 9 years off the bike.

Goal 185lbs..

Wow! I don't check in for a week or two, and WOWZERS! Lots of new posts & people! This is great! I'll have to sit down and read through all the new posts when I have more time.

For me, I'm still hovering between 202 & 204lbs. I've not been doing much on the bike at all this month. Next weekend I'll be down in Death Valley riding the Death Valley Century while by buddies are doing the Double Century. Sure hope it is warmer than Montana! :D

I finally found a photo of me when I was near my heaviest. In this photo I know I was over 300lbs:
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/zinrider/Fitness_and_weight_loss/pattygraduation.jpg

My most recent was taken on January 2nd of this year at 209lbs:

okay, its been about a month since I decided to drop weight seriously.

Calories intake has been around 1,500- 1,700 a day. I also went on vacation to Holland for a week, well business vacation. Lost .5 lbs thanks to walking about 30 miles in a week.

I'm at 231 - and with two days of big exercise coming up, I think I could be below 229 by Monday.

I rode about 150 miles in February on the trainer, so not bad missing a week.

I want to be below 225 by the end of March, if not 220.

Okay the 230 barrier is in the rear view mirror - and that's on a full stomach.

I have ridden nearly 150 miles the past two weeks, eaten better, lifted weights, and after dinner tonight I weighed in at 229.

I am down 15 lbs since February 6th.

I have had some success with weight loss and healthier lifestyle. Over the past three years, I've slowly dropped about 35 lbs, lowered my bad cholesterol immensely, and increased my good cholesterol to a level that my doctor has only seen in one other person in her career. How? The hard way.

Notice first that it took me two years (and I still could lose 5-10lbs). Slow and steady wins this particular race. I drastically overhauled my diet and cut out all dairy and meat, almost all refined carbs, and lowered my fat intake. I eat mostly complex carbs in the form of veggies, fruit, and 100% whole grains. I still eat fish because it's so damn good for you. Nuts and soy protein play a fairly big role. Lastly, I dusted off the old bike (eventually trading it in for something from this century) and rode, rode, rode. To work, after work, on weekends, indoors in the winter. GOTTA KEEP MOVING. Inertia kills. I train smart now with heart rate and ride 5 out of 7 days, weather and two-year old permitting.

I have also educated myself about what it takes to be healthy. I don't mean how to eat like sh** and shrink your waist size. I mean HEALTH. Energy, vitality, and a deep sense of control over how (and for how long) I live my life. Read ANYTHING by Dr. Neal Barnard www.nealbarnard.org/ or www.pcrm.org/. His 'Turn Off the Fat Gene' saved my life. What he has to say about diet is tough to hear, but I believe it to be true. Chris Carmichael's 'Food for Fitness' is actually quite good too.

Best of luck.

Hey! Congrats on your weightloss! Very good job!

I love Bikejourna.com! I have found the most supportive and fun group of folks there. In fact, I just got back from a trip to ride with a group of our Bikejournal members. We went down to Death Valley for the Death Valley Double & Century. I sure had a great time! I picked up 10lbs from the century ride. Now to work to flush all that water weight and get back down to 202lbs and beyond!

Look on the bikejournal forums for the ReUnion thread. We'll be getting together for our 3rd annual reunion in July out in IL. Would love to see you there!

On January 14, 2006, my weight was an all-time high 275.

This morning, March 19, 2006, my weight is down to 240.

My target weight is 205 to get to a bmi of 24. I haven't set a target date for this because I fear the pressure of attaining it in a given timeframe will do more harm than good.

I have modified my diet quite a bit, focusing now on low- GI foods... lots of fruit and veg, fish, chicken and lean meats (in smaller portions than before), and high-fibre cereals. Very little starches, no bread. Decaf tea and coffee, NO fast foods at all except for salads; no deep fried foods. What a difference!

And, I took the plunge and actually began commuting this winter (normally, I'm just a warm weather commuter). I've now set myself a goal of doing a double metric century solo this summer.

Howdy all! Long time, no see. :)

It's probaby been a few months since I've been in here. The last few months have not been the greatest for me.....between a few out of town interviews, bike problems and being sick a time or two and working like a dog lately, I've not ridden nearly as much as I was before.

Although...with all that, I have not gained back too badly.

To recap:
Last year started around the 370 range (estimated) and ended around 307. It looks like currently, I've put a few back on...maybe at about 315 or so now. Desperately trying to get back "in the groove" this year, but its hard with so many outside issues limiting my riding. I bought a trainer (just last week) to help...we'll see how that goes.

I just scored a major victory. I lost my first 10 lbs. It has been over 3 weeks, that I began to weigh in.

My secret:
Commute 75 miles per week
25+ weekend ride
Weight training 2-3 x per week
Still eat like cr*p!

I have been strength training and riding stationary bike since November and noticed significant body composition change, but no weight loss. Now the weight is going.

Any other success stories?
Potential Subway commercial candidates?
Well, I think I might be a candidate..........
March 2005: Body weight 581 pounds......not a typo...581 pounds. In a wheelchairbound, on O2
March 2006: Body weight 249 pounds......did a 106 mile weekend tour on the anniversary date of my bariatric surgery

I currently ride daily and cycling is the primary exercise that allowed me to lose as much weight as I did in combination with the bariatric surgery I had. Drop by my blogs at either http://theamazingshrinkingman.blogspot.com or http://spaces.msn.com/theamazingshrinkingman/ to read the whole story, the blogspot is the oldest and contains the earliest parts of the story. I'm also writing a book about my journey back to health and intend to culminate the story with completing the Lotoja (http://www.lotojaclassic.com/LOTOJAmain_content.html) in 2007. Not a bad goal for a 2 1/2 year period!

No change this week. Last week was rough as my body was screaming for more food... so I fed it. I felt better, albeit guilty, afterwards. This week I'm back on track with the food intake and riding stronger than last week. Also, I'm swimming better and feel a little stronger in the gym so maybe the extra food was worth not losing any more fat (maybe I gained muscle?). The journey continues...
