Hey All:

Here's the weekly update. Slow and steady.

February 27, 2006 - 274lbs
March 6, 2006 - 268lbs (wk tot: 57.3; year tot 57.3)
March 13, 2006 - 266lbs (wk tot: 77.95; year tot: 135.25)
March 20, 2006 - 260lbs (wk tot:109.2; year tot: 244.75)
March 27, 2006 - 255lbs (wk tot:118.7; year tot: 363.15)
*April 3, 2006 - 251lbs (wk tot: 108; year tot: 471.15)

My workouts have become boring so I have started doing different interval training schedules. Just a little bit of change can go a long way.

Still reading Riding with the Blue Moth. Restarting Heft on Wheels again for inspiration.

Peace.

Ok I'm still at 206 after spiking to 210 last weekend. The gym and diet are doing the job but it gets ruined by lack of control on weekends.

Since my heart attack 3 years ago I've lost 73 lbs...down from 250 to 177 lbs as of this morning. Gave up all sugar and other high glycemic foods. Also took up marathons and long distance cycling. I'm 52 years old and feel better than I have in 20 years...waist size went from 40 to 32...no more yoyo dieting...just slow and steady weight loss from a lifestyle change. It took a health crisis to create a paradigm shift! Frank:D

Rewarded myself today for losing 45 pounds commuting by putting some cash down on a Giant OCR2. Test ride made me drool after riding my MTB since October. Burning fat and stress and reaping the rewards. Ride on.

Apr 5th - 154lbs, Total Chol 189, good 42, tri 101

Doc told me to lose 30lbs and the numbers would probably work themselves out. Been running 10-15 miles per week, eating lots of fiber and veggies, but mainly cut the s@#t out of my diet. Just recently bought a bike and am training for and olympic distance triathlon or two this year. Ultimate goal is to get down to 145 lbs and qualify for the Boston Marathon this fall.

And am loving this cycling thing!!!

Another pound gone this week. I go for my monthly %BF check next week (calipers by a trainer) and I'm hoping it's less than 18%. I'm pretty sure I'll make my goal of 175 by May 1st. I'll have to set a date for my next goal of 170 (I can usually maintain 170 during the summer when my mileage goes up).

So me - 6' 4" - 270# - I didn't mind the weight when I was doing power-lifting on a regular basis but I'm not now .. not doing anything. I have been slacking the past couple years and I need to get back on track. What are you doing for your excercise/weight loss program? I think I will have my sister measure my "fat" percentage ... that should get me going again.

Hello guys,
I started cycling for fitness last september. I was 170 pounds and lost around 20 pounds just before I got married. My wife and I moved to a smaller town and I didnt have any ride buddies so weight came back. Now I am back on track; this time with a heart rate monitor. My actual weight is 170 again and will post any progress here.

Cheers,

Ricardo

I too used to powerlift and bodybuild. I was on track scholarship in college... all the weight events. I too just slacked off... for years. I'm turning 40 in August and want to be in the best shape as I can.

Right now I am just riding and doing core exerceses... mostly crunches. I ride anywhere from 1.5 - 2 hours a day. I use a heart rate monitor. I eat about 4-5 times a day... no specific diet except not to eat anything in excess... and no fast food, soda, chips, etc. I really watch my portion control. When I was lifting I would eat a lot... now I realize my body doesn't need the quantity anymore... just quality.

Where in MA are you. I'm starting to ride with the Charles River Wheelmen. Group rides are fun and they push you as well as provide fellowship.

Peace.

I had a series of 3 flats (2 in one ride). After examining the tubes, I noticed that the holes were basically in the same spots. It ended up being due to poor rim tape.

Wow, you all are doing great! I hope you're all feeling better as the pounds/kilos come off and the bike miles/kilometers go up.

No change for me this week. I just knew that these last few pounds were going to be the toughest to lose. It seems my 40+ year old body really wants to hang on to some fat more than it did in the past. I guess that's normal. Of course, I'm a chocoholic and the temptation of Easter candy hasn't helped, but I think I've got that under control now that it's all hidden away. I'll have to get used to much smaller drops in weight from now on and if I can lose 1/2 lb per week, that'll be considered "good progress". Cycling continues to improve, especially on the hills. Swimming improves at a much slower rate, but I enjoy it and it's a great way to do something aerobic off the bike.

I need to be 190 by end of the summer; that will give me a buffer so I don't re-enter the clydesdale club over the winter...

Total loss 34 pounds since Jan 06.

THis thread is the most inspiring thing I've read all day. I to am on the lose weight/get healty ride. I'm turning 44 in a couple weeks and although I'm not where i want to be weight wise. I'm ALOT healthier than I was in my 30s. I hit the gym all winter and started riding again 3 days ago. I did 15 miles on my 1st time out and was pleasently suprized at my endurance. Although I took it easy, there still only one way to get up the hills.:D I'm 6' weight lifter type and was up to 309 3 years ago. Lost about 50, gained about 30 back. I'm now heading back in the right direction. My goal is 250 by the end of summer, then go for 230. I just love riding.:D

I never noticed this sticky....... I have been losing weight since the 1st of the year.... Was at 204 on xmas, 200 on the 1st. I started cycling seriously at the beginning of the year as well. Here is a graph of my progress. I want to hit 180 by May 14th. After that, I will reassess and decide if I want to go to 175 or lower... I kinda slacked off the last few weeks, now I am back on track, bringing my lunch, and watching intake closely.

Goal achieved!!! I finally made it to 175 lbs and beat my deadline by 1 week. I'm feeling great at 175 with 17% body fat. Sometimes it was easy to stay on track and, at other times, very difficult. You just have to stick with it and not obsess over the "falling off the wagon" days. Simply get back on track and get going again. Now I'll see if I can reach 170 lbs, but the weight is coming off very slowly now so I'll have to assess a realistic date for attaining this new goal. Keep up the good work everyone and don't give up!!

Aham looking good...Keep up the miles and you will break that 200 barrier.

I've adjusted my schedule to go to bed earlier and get up at 0530 for either a one hour bike ride or walk. It has worked. I'm down to 197-198 and I am no longer looking at 195 at the end of summer but 190. I've also adjusted my eating schedule. A high fiber breakfat at 0700, snack of yogurt with whole grain at 1100, half a sandwich at 1300, the second half at 1500, fruit snack at 1700 and a light dinner at 1800. On heavy workout days I add some Whey protien into the mix...Small meals all day and it works. The other thing that I've found by setting this type of schedule is that it keeps me reminding me of my fitness goals throughout the day.

It may not be for everyone but it works for me.

Thanks Greg200, but it looks like you still got the lead! Must ride now!! I like your plan and you nailed it on the head. You just got to find what works for you. I eat early 630am, high fiber cereal, then a banana around 930am, then lunch around 1130am, then an apple or other light snack around 2pm, and finally dinner around 530-6pm. Ohyeah, and maybe some light 94% fat free white popcorn around 730pm if I need it.

I am most hungry around 11am and 3pm. My workouts normally take place late afternoon, 2-5pm. I big workout days I may endulge with a pre workout cliff bar or FRS energy drink. I have had the urge to eat more lately, but I think that is from my workouts and rides becoming more intense.

190s I hope to see you soon! Later.

im strugglin. i ride abour 50-60 miles per week, take in approx 2000 calories per day and have lost 10 pounds in a month.

The way I figure, if you sit on the couch for 12 solid hours, your body will burn 1500 calories. I take in 2000 and burn off about 1000 during a 1.5 hour ride (15.0 mph avg)

Am I not in a calorie deficit? Shouldnt I be loosing?

I eat Subs and cereal and drink a ton of water, no soda no snacks

Im 204 and July 30 I was almost 220

Am I doing the right thing?

Help!

I am excited and encouraged by all the postings in this thread. However, can anyone comment on how to get started and what type of routine would be appropriate for an old spoke like me, 49 years old, male, 5-10, 205 pounds. I was heavy into road bikes 25-30 years ago (course I weighted 150 pounds then) and I am getting back in the swing of riding. I am working out 3 times a week for 15 to 22 miles. Any advice as to what training routine would be appropriate and effective.

keep doin the same. Watch the food intake as well. No suger, 1500 good calories a day if ya wanna drop weight, 100 ounces minimum per day of water. Ride, Ride, Ride. Try to keep 60/20/20 caloric ratio. 60% Carbs, 20 fat, 20 protein.

Sounds almost like me, except I'm a few years younger. When I started to get back into cycling in January, I could hardly ride 15 or 20 minutes on the trainer and 15 minutes of lap swimming was my max. It took about 5 weeks for my body to acclimate to the new "routine" and for my metabolism to start swinging around. Just stick with it and try to increase your time on the bike every week. Then throw in some interval training once a week. It doesn't have to be anything crazy - I started with 30 seconds "on" and something like 2 minutes "recovery" and only did that three times. It doesn't sound like much but it really helps. Watching your calories will be pretty vital and I found fitday.com to be a very useful tool for that. Unfortunately, even with tracking calories, I had some weak moments and ate things I shouldn't have or ate too much "good" food. If you stick with it, I'm sure you'll make excellent progress. Just remember to set realistic goals because, as my Ukrainian fitness guru says, "it takes time to grow a strong tree."

Good luck!!!

Very doable weight loss, just focus on the weight, not the date. It takes a long time to pick up the pounds, allow yourself time to lose it. Don't let plateaus where you aren't losing depress you, keep riding.

Hi There!

I'm looking for tips and advice on losing a few pounds.

Since the end of last summer and xmas i seemed to have picked-up 15 pounds, now my goal is to lose 10 of them.

I currently ride about every other day trying to get in at least one 30+km ride per week, I do a little bit of weights but not much.

Any other advice?

First of all, congratulations to all the success stories here. But I would like also to gloat about myself for a moment (something I rarely do).

I find myself almost exactly 14 months after beginning a weight loss/excercise/spritual enrichment program. I got on the scale this morning and weighed 185 pounds. I have also lost 185 pounds. I am officially half the man I used to be! I have been so happy Ican't hardly stand myself! Fourteen months age I weighed 370 pounds, had raging diabetes (sugars in the 200 to 400 range all the time) Kidneys beginning to deteriorate, blurred vision, numb hands and feet, no energy whatsoever, constant chest pains and an irregular heartbeat. I had no desire to do anything, and had nearly alienated my family due to my lack of energy and irritability brought on by my obesity. I honestly could not see myself living another 5 years. My typical meals were enough to feed 4 normal people. One day before going to work I was dizzy, having terrible chest pains (worse than usual) and my heart was skipping beats. I seriously thought I was getting ready to have a heart attack, but foolishly did nothing other than hide it. I went to work that night and got feeling slightly better. I kept thinking how crazy it was to live like this. I have a wife and an 8 year old boy I have to provide for and be a father/husband to. I thought what would happen to them when I died (which I felt to be soon). All because of of putting bad/excess quantities of food in my mouth.

I don't want to get preachy and offend anyone, but I was a devout non-believer in a higher power. I came home that night and was so desperate that I got on my knees and prayed to God (not that I believed in Him, but I was out of options). I asked to receive his help so that I could not make my wife and child fatherless/husbandless due to my excessive eating. I told Him that if He would show me the way to get out of the hole I was in, that I would give my life and soul to Him. The very next day I began to eat more healthy and actually made it through the day. I began to find healthier alternatives to eat and drink, began riding my bicycle again. I now have become half my former weight, ride between 100 and 200 miles weekly, am on no medicine otjher than an allergy pill, completely reversed my diabetes, am in better health than I can ever remember, and am a true believer in God and Jesus Christ. It is all thanks to God and bicycling that I have turned my life around from a certain early grave. I have done it completely naturally with no surgery, drugs or any of that stuff. My eating habits are completely changed, eating regular foods (no gimmicky foods of any kind). I feel I am prepared to keep this weight off the rest of my life. It is possible. I am living proof. Thanks very much for listening.

Frankie,

Awesome story. Awesome!

Thanks for sharing that with me.

Today I rode 21.5 miles, nice to get outside, in the past 7 days I've done 55 miles.

I was going to ride 38 miles for my 38th birthday, but commitments kept me from riding that far. Today I rode 44 miles instead. This is the farthest I've ever ridden in 1 stretch. I hope to do the Tour d'Organics August 20th. 6 months ago I couldn't concieve of a time I might be planning a century. I am healthier and have more energy than I've been in 10 years or more. Now aiming at 200 lbs....ride on.

Down to 173 lbs. The weight is really coming off very slowly now, but it's still forward progress and that's all that counts. Keep up the good work everyone!

I'm jumping into this as I've become inspired from this thread!

I started commuting by bike recently to get in better shape and of course escape the 3.00+ dollars at the pump. The final straw was when the scale hit 210. I'm 5'11 so this isn't a good thing.

Stats as of 5/9/06

Weight: 210 lbs

Pulse: 70 bpm

bp: 141/86

The above stats are not horrid but they are bad enough especially since i'm a living donor and after donating a kidney, I'm down to one. High BP is the most harmful thing to my remaining kidney so I have to get this under control... pronto!

Here we go.

My Plan is to ride more and add some weight training as well as just clean up my diet a little more. I need to drop 30 lbs. I think this is the biggest challenge of my life and seriously my life probably depends on it.

Any suggestions would be helpful and I'll check in daily to offer and get support. lol. Thanks all.

Recently hit my lowest weight to date. 199lbs. Hovering at 200lbs. So, 20lbs to go to hit the next target weight. Its been a struggle to get below, and remain below 200lbs. This last 20 is stubborn!

Hey Zin, Great pic and Great Job. Your story is awesome.

My weekly weigh-in was 193.6. That is crazy low and almost 3 more pounds lost this past week and over 40 total. My riding and workouts have halted this week due to various crappy weather issues and family stuff, but I still chugging along. Later.
