your posts are always very motivational. Here is my humble update... I reached a plateau and have been strugling a bit to lose more pounds. Rested for a little less than a week and I am now back. Here are my statistics:
Age 26
MHR 192
RHR 60 (12 BPM less)
Weight 192 lbs (8 pounds less)
BMI 29.7
Body Fat 27.9% (Technically not obese but almost...)
Waist 39 inches (one inch lost)
Average Cadence per Min: 74 (Started at 60)

I'm hitting it hard again too!. I'm 5'9" and started out again at almost 260. I've lost a bit over the past three weeks and down to 246. My initial goal is sub 200, and then 170 to 175 for a maintenance weight. I have seen the most dramatic loss in the past week. I guess it takes a few weeks for the body to start digesting that fat and get muscle working. I have been doing spinning classes primarily and started taking tennis lessons twice a week which really works up a sweat too.

Hey guys I just started up witha weight loss routine. I currently changed my diet and ride my bike as much as possible but would like to add in the gym but dont know what to do there.
What is a good recomendation for a beginner? Just do full body workouts? Focus on the major muscles (back, chest, legs)?
As it is getting colder I ride slightly less and dont want to slow down any progress. I just started and am very excited and would love to see results.
Hey Turboem1 congrats on getting the ball rolling. I started last winter, Jan 4th, with my new eating habits and working out. I focused on eating healty and limiting my calories. For working out I did some type of cardio 4 or 5 times a week. Nothing major at first. Just 30 minutes on a treadmill or elliptical machine. The key for me was controlling what I ate. No more crap. I ate when I was hungry but ate fruits or veggies. I lost 25 lbs before I even began cycling. Now I am down 60 lbs and cycle and run all the time because I can and I like it. Good luck.

Wow Zin that is great. Last December when I posted here you were 212 and I was 190. This morning I was down to 173.6 but that is not the whole story since I dropped to 175.6 on April 12 and was up to 187 on September 5th . I blew it after April 12 and after I hit 187 I was focused 100% on my diet and biking and have set a goal of 170 by next month and a 1 lb loss per month until I hit 160.

Wow, thanks for all the very kind words, everyone. It makes me happy to know that my journey, my story, can help others who are trying to get healthy.
Life has been just crazy since moving to Colorado. Sorry for not being more active here. I hope things settle down a bit so I can get back into a normal routine.
My current weight has creeped back up to 192lbs. This is ok, since I've not been able to eat right and focus on it. At my last doctor visit, he told me that he wants to see me at 175lbs. :O
Here I am at 192lbs at the Hilly Hundred ride in southern Indiana. Not entirely sure I can get down to 175lbs.

Update here guys.
I had an urinary and kidney infection that sent me to the hospital for 2 weeks and 2 more resting at home. That means one month away from the bike, however, I managed to mantain weight only eating healthy, veggies, lean meats, no fast food... Right now I am at 190lbs. I hope I start losing more weight as soon as I resume my biking...
Hope that motivates someone.

PS: My wife said that I my pants already look baggy so she will be getting one inch from the waistline.
PS2: When she noticed the results she will start eating healthy too and hopefully biking...

I'm getting back into weight loss mode for the winter. Seems LCing in the winter with lower activity levels works best for me.
I am planning to add spinning classes, weight training, and perhaps swimming this winter. Now that I'm single and living in a new city, I don't have much to to with my time. Especially until I find a job.

I get twice as much exercise in the winter than I do in the summer. I will be adding running as soon as my 970 New Balance shoes show up. And if it snows I will just get my Surly Pugsley out.:D

I just started aerobics, I run, I do yoga, I'll keep bike commuting to work, and switch from road riding to offroad riding. It helps that my local club just built a cyclocross course only a three mile ride from my house.:p

I have gotten some good winter gear, will be getting studded tires, so will ride as much as possible. I also will be ordering snowshoes, I want to do a lot of snowshoeing this winter.

I currently weigh 175 and I want to get down to 155. I climb and bike. I am hoping to tone up a little and slim down. I was using FitDay, but I can't always find the foods I eat any tips?

Manually enter in the foods using said foods nutritional lable. I have most of the items I it manually entered in a "custom foods." If you are serious about tracking the cals this is the best route. Good luck. Later.

Congratulations! How long did it take to drop those 3 lbs? Remember you should lose aprox 1lb per week in order to ensure a healthy weight loss. I'd recommend reading the book Food for Fitness by Chris Carmichael and get a picture of yourself before starting your weight loss program and take some more pictures during the process to track your progress and hopefully inspire more people to lose weight.

I am officially jumping into the weight loss fray.Same story, got fat after marriage and kids.Tried to lose weight with not much success.The catalyst was this weekend my 13 year old son who has a mountain bike he rides around the neighborhood,suggested we go onto a trail and ride some.lets just say I didnt make it far.I need to lose weight.Im going to be posting my losses here regular.Monday 10/30 weight was 296.Lets see what it is next monday.Hopefully being accountable will motivate me.

congrats on getting started. it is half the battle. it took an office biggest loser style contest with a $50 entry fee to get me going. that was 1/04/06 and i have dropped 60 lbs and discovered the wonderfully world of cycling. heck, i got people telling me i am too skinny now and i eat whatever i want????
can i ask how old and tall you are?

thanks for the welcome aham.nice job with the weightloss.I'm 41 years and 5'11" tall.I figure my ideal weight to be in the 200-210 range.Last night I borrowed my brothers bike trainer and only lasted 15 min on it.Those are harder than you would think.later.
Well, I'm back in hopefully for good now. 2 years ago you guys helped me stay motivated to loose 35 pounds before an elk hunt. Never felt better. I ended up having hernia surgery and got out of my routine. Just haven't been able to get back in and stay. Finally got tired of being out of breath and just not feeling as energetic as before and looking as good as when I lost teh weight. Just ordered a trainer for the winter riding, should have it tomorrow. Can't wait to get back at it. 218 today with a goal of being in teh low 190's like before.

When college started in fall 04, i was at a 46in waist, now a little bit over 2 years later, i am at a 36in waist. I only biked for 1 of those two years, and it really made a difference, i am abroad this semester with no bike and it sucks, but i have been able stave off wait gain, when i get back to chicago in 3 weeks i am going to return to training and hopefuly get down to a 34 by spring, and a 32 by summer, my target weight is around 230, i could never get under that without dropping serious muscle.

well i have lost 40 lbs since aug 1. combination of diet and lots of riding. i do roughly 20 mile rides at a 15mph avg or above. i had to work up to it. now i joined a bike clube and will be doing 25-40 mile rides. i made 82 miles on sunday but a mechanical failure prevented the century completion. so in a month there is a century and i am planning on doing it. granted by mile 75 i was in bad shape and i think i woiuld have finished but not usre... so i am in training so to speak for the next one. i am currently 206 and 5'11". man i feel so much better than when i was 245

Bad news from this side... for some strange reason I managed to gain a lot of weight with no particular explanation. Or my scale is damaged or I gained like 6 pounds in two weeks. According to my crappy scale I am back to square 1. Right to the same weight I was in August.

I weighed 169 this morning down from 187 on September 5th and biking up hills better than I have in the last 20+ years. I quit eating processed crap and eat lots of veggies,fruit and get most of my protein from fish,beans and lentils.

Update;
As of this morning, I'm now down to 258...89lbs in 10 months.
If I keep up this pace, my goal will be reached. In addition to going to the gym (almost) every day, I'm also playing hockey twice/week.
An object in motion tends to stay in motion........
February 4, 2006: 347lbs
August 11, 2006: 283lbs
Paying attention to what goes in and 5-6 mornings/week of 60 minutes on an elliptical machine & stationary bike (30 minutes each) plus a course of weight machines is what's been working for me. If I can't get to the gym in the morning, I'll go for a 10 mile or so loop ride or hit the treadmill at home for a medium speed jog, and I ride both days every weekend for 10+ miles. In another month or so, Saturday night pick-up hockey starts, so there's a little more variety to help keep things interesting.
My goal is to be in the 200-225 range when I hit 40 which is the end of March. I'm thinking it's doable.....

How did everyone deal with Thanksgiving weight gain? I did a 100k on Saturday, I think that should have pretty much taken care of it. This year since June 10, I have managed to lose 25 lbs, another 10 lbs to go. I am now putting out at least 300 miles per month.
Tell us about how your thanksgiving went and how you dealt with weight gain if any.

I kept my weight steady thru Thanksgiving - mainly by stopping eating when I was full, and not hanging around the kitchen. Keeping busy really helps. I was at my parents, so I didn't bike, but my sister and I did about 4-5 miles running on Friday AM. When I got back on Saturday, I rode 50 miles on my hybrid. Got my new road bike on Monday (Giant OCR C2), and have just been riding it in the neighborhood trying to get used to it....
Right now I'm at 191 or so....down from 240 (AGGHHH!!!!) on March 9th. Most of this has been from exercise (riding, running and weight training), with moderate diet changes. The big twist? Giving up Diet Coke. For some reason, that's caused me to eat a lot lesss.

Ok, I'll jump into the weight loss fray....a couple months ago, my wife and I joined weight watchers. I started out at 235, and am now at 213. Goal is 180 by June 1. I am planning on doing my first century in June, with two more major rides during the summer. Just started riding last March, at age 55. Did about 1000 miles over the summer. I figure that I should be able to handle the hills a lot better without the carrying the "spare tire" along.

Well I started commutung by bike back in August and hae gone from 260 to 230. My main diet change has been replacing most of my unhealthy snacks with fruit and vegetables. I try to avoid foods with zero nutrients. Anyway... I'm not a big fan of strict diets because I like to enjoy food (especially this time of year) but I am finally realizing the joys of moderation.
what a great thread. i love the new and old updates!! my story has been documented. one thing lead to another, i found cycling, and i have lost 63 lbs. i am 6'3'' and now 170 lbs. at 236 most people didnt even think i was overwieght. heck, i didnt think i was. check my blog, my before and after pics, and you can see i was headed for trouble. it is all about diet. control the calories in and get off your butt! i started with walking on a treadmill. then running for minutes. then cycling 10 miles at a time. then and then and then. it just got better and better. i have done centuries, rode across a state, cycled 2500 miles my first summer and now as the weather turns cold i run.........5k, 10k, maybe a half marathon, maybe chicago marathon. the point is maybe you can too. just give it a chance. alright, enough said. later.

Dang. Gained 8 lbs over this holiday. So here I am.
I was 46 and thought I looked fine. Until I went on my first club ride, and saw a pic of me from the side. Whoa! Chubby! Was that me?? Co-workers tried to make me feel better by saying I didn't look that big in person, and pictures always add 10 pounds. Ha. So I rode. I lost 20-25 lbs. (I don't know my max weight. But I know a tank that I had in college that fit me 8 lbs ago, didn't even go over my shoulders then...)
So to lose it, I'm swearing off all the candy, cookies, Cheese-Its and chips that I've been munching on way too much. I'm always thinking about food. I hate riding in the cold, so although I still ride for errands and commuting, I'm depending on spin class and repetitions to help lose the weight.
I'm 48 (in two weeks), 118 lbs, 5' 1.25", and female.
I hate the winter. I love Cheese-Its.

My first post here on bikeforums.com...
This is not a weight loss success story, yet. I'm 6ft and 218 pounds, down from about 240 a couple of years ago. I love biking, but living in Maine gives us a short season for biking in nice weather and indoor cycling is obnoxious. Santa brought me Netathon and a retro fit kit to link it to the trainer (Cycle Ops mag trainer) that I arleady had. So far, I love it and look forward to riding whenever I can. I will be slowing increasing my workout times and frequency over the next few weeks. If I can stick to my plan until the end of January, I will reward myself with a new (new to me) road bike frame and start building my Summer machine.
I'm excited to have cycling (and staying fit) a part of my lifestyle again.

It appears that we all have been a bit busy. I know I didn't do well over the holidays!
I had a friend out for the week of Thanksgiving and did a week of hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing with her. I ate as I pleased and gained no weight due to the activity level. Hanging in at 187lbs
I spent Dec 2-18 in Atlanta, GA attending some technical training. NO activity except for studying at all. Came back from that at 199.8!
December 22'd went to Texas to visit my aging mother and family for Christmas. Got a nice 38 mile ride in the Hill Country. Was delayed returning until after the first of the year due to the "latest" blizzard. Finally made it back. Weight was 197lbs.
Today, 194lbs and back on track with my LC lifestyle. I even set the rollers up and did 30 minutes before the "end" came.
So, what/how has everyone else been doing? Come on! Fess up! :D

My weight quite often swings by 4-8 pounds in as little as two days (on a decent scale). Quite frankly that worries me a little. But anyhow, the point is that a lot of that is probably water, food moving through the system, scale noise, etc., so I wouldn't get too worked up about it. You probably lost a little less than you thought, but also gained back less than you think.

I haven't checked in for a while but after one year the total weight loss is around 50 pounds. I am currently hovering between 185 and 190. I remember beginning this weight loss thread with Aham and that man just blew by us all. But from 235 to 185 has been good to me. During the winter I have to watch my calorie intact even more...(I just ride the trainer I'm not much for cold dark rides). I offset the need for excersizing with walking, (the knees and one badly damaged ankle cannot take the stress of running).
It's all good when you finally make the life change. Don't have any before pics but I'll see what I can do about an after pic.
Don't let the winter get you down...focus and do anything active to keep you on target.
