I have finally broken the 200 mark.

I weighed 198 today after riding. That means that I have lost 1/3 of myself.

It is so nice to be biking and not hauling that weight around.

Iowa - Congratulations on your milestone.

I've lost another 1lb to come to 182lbs or 13st in the old imperial way of doing things.

CONGRATULATIONS!

I lost 60 pounds after I gave birth to my baby girl. It was hard, I basically stopped eating snacks unless I was hungry and I biked more.Did not keep a calorie count or anything but would just not clean my plate as a means of cutting back.

Once again, success!

I weighed 193 lbs this morning. My total weight loss is 101 lbs. It is kinda cool to cross the 100 lb mark.

I have been eating a little stupid lately, but they say as your body loses more fat, it will become more efficient at burning it.

I am noticing that I fit better on the saddle. I can feel where my sit bones are supposed to be. My abdomen is still a little fat, but that is where I store it. My body fat estimate is 18% which is still normal. My BMI is 26 which is just outside the healthy range. I want to have my BMI to be 25 and my final goal is 185 lbs.

Important note: At this point in my weight loss, I am in control. I know exactly what I need to do to lose another pound this week. My next problem will be eating to maintain weight, now especially that biking season is here. I have a month to TOMRV (century on each of 2 days). I have some training goals to meet to get there.

Way to go Iowa. Amazing.

I'm down to 211 now. I'd like to get under and remain under 210. I've been weightlifting, too, so I can tell I've lost inches but am still hanging around the 210 mark.

IowaParamedic: Congrats that is a wonderful milestone to surpass. Since I've started commuting my weight has been coming off pretty well. I'm down to 265.5 which is a loss of about 14 pounds since January.

Holding steady at 182lbs which is a bit depressing. Too many Chocolate Easter Eggs. :(

Yeah, holding steady at 226 here.... not depressed though, strangely. Recently threw out a coupla pair of trousers you see....they were too big, still on a high over that.

Will get over this little hurdle QUITE soon.

I'm down another pound. Weekends seem to be my downfall. Even though I go on longer rides I tend to eat more as a reward for the longer ride. I'm going to try long write and less food on the weekends and see if the downward trend continues.

I got a huge ego boast last night. I was riding solo and passed a couple of ladies walking. I heard one say to the other "wow, check out those calves"

I hope she was talking about my legs and not comparing me to a cow :)

I have been driving trucks for years. And it being such a sedentary job, I couldn't help but gain weight. I started riding again last spring and I went from 230 down to 210 with mostly weekend riding. Then came winter and I had to get back to my winter driving job back over the road. I didn't want to because I knew that I would gain some if not all the weight back and sure enough I did. But I got off that truck April 1st and since then I am back down to 210. No sodas,no fast food and I ride everyday. Except when it rains. And wouldn't you know that this would have to be our wettest April in 20 years. But looks like it is coming to an end. So more miles less junk food. This weekend I do my first organized ride.

Congrats Kingajo. I hope you enjoy your ride. Club rides are always fun.

I have lost some more. I was a 192 this morning. I yo-yo'ed a bit through the 190's, because my wife likes ice cream, but I am back on track.

That leave 7 lbs to my final goal of 185 lbs. Then I have to learn to maintain my weight. <not using Mt. Dew and Doritos>

Funny story - I went to breakfast the other morning. I just got off from work, put on my lycra tights and headed over to a restaraunt for pancakes. I choose the restaraunt because I thought I would not know anybody there. While I was bent over locking up my bike, my co-worker came out of the restaraunt laughing. She said that she was with her mother, and she was checking me out! After her mother said something, she turned and looked and recognized me. We had a bit of a laugh about it.

Heya Zack...

I was sitting on a plane last weekend, wearing shorts, and my wife looks down at my legs, and says "Whoa... your calves are HUGE" I look at her, smile, and tell her it's about time she notices :D I then tell her that it's all the riding i'm doing... it was kinda cool

How many calories are you guys taking in a day to lose weight. i am 250 and I lost 60lbs 2 years ago and got down to 225 but i went on a 1500 cal diet and it killed me. I gained 25 back but I hate running. i hit the weights 3 days/week and i just started riding in the past 2 weeks... give a man some help here...

I don't count calories. I just write stuff down. I don't need to complicate things with caloric input and exercise output. I have been successful weighing twice a day. I know how much I have eaten during the day and compare it to my end of day weight.

The real secret? It's how much water you drink. Really!

Cool deal, Jeff!

Sometimes I'll catch Donna checking out my legs when we're riding. Now if I could just get my upper body to look as good :)

How's the Lemond coming along? I've decided that once I break 200 pounds I'm treating myself to another Lemond. Needless to say I'm super motivated right now.

Zack,

The Lemond is coming along well... so far I have the Frame and Fork, seatpost, and just got a stem in the mail a couple weeks ago... now i jsut have to save for all the important parts.. i'm hoping to have it done near the end of summer... until then i'm stuck on my early 90's Centurion 6-speed that is starting to have a funky noise coming from the Bottom Bracket i think... although it might just be chainring bolds, or crank bolts.. I have to look at it tonite...

yeha my upper body could use some work... I'm not in too bad a shape about 5'10" and around 170... I just need to lift some light weights and gain some definition... that and working on my lower back and abs... I hate doing ab work !

headliner Large calorie deficits work initially for weight loss when you have alot of weight to lose but you tend to stall out and have problems with low metabolism as your weight gets lower and you plateau.I suggest you up the weights and cycling like your planning to keep the metabolism high and eat enough calories to support this but still a moderate deficit to calories expended.I suggest you start at perhaps a 500 calorie deficit and raise or lower from there in 250 calorie increments if needed based on feedback .I don't count calories myself as I have learned over time how much my body can handle but here is one site that may help you withy some of this. www.exrx.net
Also I suggest you start a new thread and ask about calorie/energy counting sites and you will probably get some good response I know alot of sites have been posted in the past.

I had the same problem Headliner. I started at 260 and went on a super low cal diet and did alright for 20 pounds but plataeu'd there. After feeling sorry for myself for 5 mins, I started all over but instead of a calorie deficient plan, I just started to make better food choices and concentrated on my riding more. I found that for me the worst things I could eat were breads, pasta and other pointless carbs (as well as all the normal baddies like soda, chips and fried food hehe). Now I get my carbs from fruits and veggies and non fat refried beans. I allow myself a piece of flatbread or a tortilla everyday to make a veggie/humus chicken wrap or a bean/chicken burrito. I also stay away from most cheeses, but do allow myself farmers cheese from time to time. Then I also drink alot of green and black teas and eat non fat yogurts and drink non fat milk. They are metabolic enhancers that will help to raise your metabolism.
Other good ways to raise your metabolic rate are aerobic and anaerobic exercise. So its a good idea to ride alot and lift weights =) Using these idead, I have gone from a 42 inch waist to a 38 inch wasit in no time at all. My goal is a 34 inch waist. Good luck to you man.

Headliner,
Try Weight Watchers.
It is BY FAR, the EASIEST program to follow. You don't have to sweat all of the details of "caloric intake", fat content, Fiber... The Nutritionists and scientists have done most of the difficult stuff, and come up with a simple "points" formula. Basically, everything you eat is assigned a point value, ie, a 1 cup serving of pasta is 4 points. You are then given a range of points where your daily intake should be, ie 30-35 pts. It does take some time to adjust it to your bodies needs, but it really works well. Then there is the wonderful support you get from going to the meetings. It is worth it, trust me.

ChipR: Congrats on your weight loss.

I went to see the doc today for my BP and cholesterol follow up. He was quite pleased with my progress.

Total cholesteral was 181
BP was 137/79
67 BPM pulse rate
good cholesteral was up .4 %
Triglycerides, while still high, dropped considerably. I'm down to 224 which is a 130 point drop from 3 months ago. The doc upped my prescription for Niaspan to see if we can get the triglycerides down even more.

I also like his scale, after deducting 4 pounds for shoes and clothes my weight was 254. The scales I've been weighing on have been reading around 262 - 264 fully clothed.

I still have a long road to go but I'm getting there.

He told me to keep at it and come see him in 4 months. I'm going to schedule my follow up for sometime after my MS-150 ride. I can't wait to knock his socks off by telling him how I rode 100 miles on Saturday and 50 on Sunday. :)

I'm no expert, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The dosage you're on is clearly working for you, why risk anything by increasing it? Your exercise and diet regime (can't remember which one affects triglycerides more) is probably also a factor. I'd keep medication at the same level. But as I say, I'm most certainly no expert!

Do you normally weigh yourself in the morning or evening? Naked or clothed? You may need to chuck the scales, or get his calibrated.

You know, I didn't even think about that when he mentioned it. I'm going to try the higher dosage and if I have any of the side affects that are common with niaspan I'll back the dosage back down to what it was previously.

There's 5 of us in a weight loss club here at work. Every Monday we pay $1.00 to the fund and weigh fully clothed. Since this is the one we're using for the club I'm going to use it as my accurate weight, though I wouldn't mind weighing 254 :)

Alright, I've been lurking for long enough, its time for me to get on my bike and ride where you all can see me.

I'm living in suburban Chicago, and currently weight 215. If I publish it, I hope it will be greater encouragement to do my training rides and watch what I eat.

I'm going for the water plan, similar to IowaParamedic, simply because my wife has also successfully lost weight in eating smart and dringking lots of water.

Keep up your spirits and I'll keep on reporting my progress.

Thanks for listening.

I think it is about time to stop intentionally losing weight. I have hit 190. 185 was my goal, but I am riding hard now, and having trouble balancing nutrition and weight loss while riding.

I can tell the diffences in my performance with intake of carbs. I can be a fast rider and even do some climbing.

This takes me to 104 lbs of weight loss. It is quite an accomplishment, but a little more would be nice. I know I will lose a little more after a solid week of riding, but we will see how it goes.

I thought I would chime in with my final total of weight loss. 187 lbs. I am going to century tomorrow, so I started eating like crazy today. Loading up on carbs like I haven't over the past 6 months. Total loss - 107 lbs. It is not quite my goal, but still a great accomplishement. I haven't seen this weight since high school.

Friends say I look younger. Another friend saw me with my wife and thought she was dating someone new. I have even heard that my voice went higher. I am having a lot of fun.

Well, it has been awhile since I posted to this area. I think it is time to revive it, because I need new inspiration.

I put on some weight since my all time low of 187. I am sitting at 205 this morning. Following my peak on June 1, I began suspending my eating rules from time to time. I stayed with the general principals, but would eat some really bad stuff and not drink as much H20.

At some point, my performance was suffering. I may have bonked a time or two, but I thought I was losing performance during riding.

I have had terrible weekends over the past several weeks and yo-yo'ed around the 203-210 range. BUT, today's good news: My body fat is 16.6%. I was at 18% 6 months ago - but I cannot find what my weight was then. I really wish I knew, because that would be a great comparison.

Is it to late to join the club?? I've lost 65lbs sinse I started riding about 18 months ago going from 265 to 200 (just reached 200 recently that was my first goal). But even better I have lowered my blood pressure a LOT, i'm even out of the high range now :) I finally found something that I LOVE to do and it all started on a whim. I bought a clearance bike for $99 at a local Wally World (wal mart). I thought what the heck for 99 bucks i can see if i like riding, and if i dont well no big loss LOL. At about the same time I bought my nephew the same bike because he said "i'll ride with you Uncle Jay".... Umm sure he rode about 5 times with me LOL. 5 or 6 months later I had wore out the bike (bent rear axle 2 times, lots of busted spokes, busted shifter cable). So I started riding the bike I had bought my nephew (he wasn't using it). 5 or 6 months later I wore that one out too. About 4 months ago I decided it was time (more to the point had the money) to get a better bike. I bought a 2003 Gary Fisher Tassajara (love the bike so far and have put about 1500 miles on it).

I guess eating better and gettin off the couch (or out of this chair) really does make a difference. I ride about 15 miles a day and on the weekends i'll ride from 30 to 40 miles on sat and sunday. I wish I could afford to buy a road bike, but its just not in the budget right now.... so I guess i'll continue to wear out the soft mountain bike tires <for now.... doh>.

I just found the forums tonight (about 4hrs ago) and love it, sooo much info here.

thanks for letting me share my lil story...... Jay

p.s. On a whim I bought some used roller blades at a yard sale for a buck (yup i'm cheap LOL). I tried roller blading 2 days ago, the jury is still out on weather I like that or not :)

I'm gonna post it one more time.
To be successful LONG TERM, you need to find a program that lets you have weak moments, and recover quickly.
No eating program has the long term success of Weight Watchers.
Try it. Trust me. 3 years membership and 152 pounds of weight loss CAN'T be wrong.
Just me, my wife and our two friends that sit together at the meetings have accounted for over 600 pounds of weight loss.

IowaParamedic
11-06-03, 08:16 PM
WTG! 65 lbs and two bikes worn out. You've lost what both of those bike weighed! :)

You'll love it here. Lots of motivation to share.

I am beat tonight. I thought about resting today, but it didn't happen. I actually had 4 hours of exercise by the time it was over. 1 hour commute, 1 hour swimming, 1 hour road bike, 30 minutes weights, 30 minutes cardio.

I am worn out, but loving it. I think I will sleep well tonight.

Hi folks!

Looks like I'll be hanging out in here quite a bit. If you didn't read my post in "Introductions" I am getting back into biking after not having done it since my teens... I just turned-urgh!!- 40!! :(

I'll spare you the gore and let you read my introduction post to see the sordid details on my weight but suffice it to say...

It's going to be a loooooong haul for me, but a great one I truly believe!! My goal is a 5 year tour with my wife and daughter-fully loaded-through North America, Europe and Asia so the road to attain that begins now.

Tomorrow my wife and me start Weight Watchers. My late mom(she passed away from bone cancer in 1997)always had a weight problem once she had me and brother in the 60's but when she started WW in 1974 and reached her goal weight in 1976 she was slim and trim the rest of her life. She was a devotee of WW swearing by it and preaching its wisdom to any and all that would listen as THE ONLY sensible "Lifestyle Change Program". She refused to call it a diet-believing that the word diet made people feel automatically excluded and denied from something necessary and pleasurable e.g. Food. She even met the founder(I think her name was Jean Neidich or something close to that)of WW and kept an autographed picture of her in her and my dads bedroom. lol

So anywho... we're psyched and ready to Rock-N-Roll!! Between WW and cycling my wife and me are prepared to let the shrinking begin.

You guys go for it. The program works. If you don't get along with the leader, find a different one, that you "synch" with. It helps a lot.

Good luck.

Do you have to be in Weight Watchers to do this?
I lost at least 10 pounds since joining the forums, and the exercise was mainly from raking leaves, pushups, carrying trash cans full of leaves, and the like.
What exercises do others of you do other than riding?

Target weight = 180 also (not a target weight but my next goal, first goal was

good luck and keep riding everybody......

..

Ride through it! I was stuck at 240-245lbs for most of the summer, even though I was riding 12-20 miles weekdays and 20+ on the weekends (1800 calorie/day diet)! My doctor said I was most likely building muscle mass. He asked me if my waist size had decreased, and indeed it had. In the past 2 months it has started to drop again. Just hang in there and keep riding!

Its been 3 weeks since I have been able to get out on the bike due to ICE on the roads. Tonight I will finally get to break that long dry spell. :D I am glad to say I have maintained my weight!

Have Fun! And keep us updated. :roflmao:
